The new Communal Coffee in South Park + recent visit to Hawthorn Coffee

At the end of March, Bert and I went to check out the new coffee spot in South Park...

which happens to be in the old Christmas tree lot on Fern...

You can't miss it since there is a Bunny Kitty mural there. That plus a vintage 1959 Shasta trailer from which they serve their coffee. Communal Coffee opened their second location in early March. They use the same roasters here that they do at the other Communal Coffee, Sightglass (from SF).  Paper cups here only.  Poo.

Bert's Mocha and my cortado.

You know how I feel about paper cups. Faaaaack. A larger drink, I understand, but a small drink like the cortado looks so lame in a cup like this.  I also don't think the guy here knew what he was doing. He seemed new and maybe was being trained or something.  Plus, sucky latte art. My drink was not that great to be honest. Kind of burnt tasting. Bert liked his mocha well enough. He's not as picky about glassware as I am.

Not sure if I would return but hey, I got TC some free stickers.

We walked up the block to see what happened to the old Rebecca's Coffeehouse. It closed a few months ago and will become the new location of Buona Forchetta.  I remember Rebecca's having very good cranberry orange scones.

I wanted better coffee somewhere else so we traversed up 30th to head to North Park.  The former laundromat on 30th and Redwood still has some of the original mural on it (yet another Bunny Kitty). The building is now a preschool/nursery.

At the bend of Upas and 30th is The Taco Stand, which replaced Tacos Perla.

In the art deco building that houses a liquor store, an upholstery place and Hawthorn Coffee was a new development. The old dry cleaning place next door to Hawthorn is keeping it's name but will be serving up gelato. Interesting.

Hawthorn is one of our reliable 'go-to' coffee spots (which include Cafe Moto, Cafe Virtuoso and Caffe Calabria).  There was a new drink on their menu I wanted to try.

Bert's dark mocha with oat milk (which he said didn't taste that good with the dark chocolate), a savory ham and cheese croissant and my orange cardamom latte.

The croissant was not warmed up which would have been nice because the cheese was all hardened. Not that fun to eat.  Bert's mocha probably would have tasted better with almond milk. That Oatly, a new type of alternative milk, had a wierd taste to it. He liked it when we tried it in Portland but it was for a different drink I believe.  As for my latte, the cardamom flavor was really subtle. The cara cara orange flavor was also subtle, but more pronounced that the spice.  I really liked it. Something about orange with espresso meshes well for me. Hawthorn does it right.
