The new Ranch 99, Chula Vista (the store)

Signs were up on the old Haggens (formerly Vons) on Telegraph in November of last year...

with progress in late December..

up until late March/early April when the new Ranch 99 in my 'hood opened...

It was a long time coming and while we were en route back to SD from our Spring Break trip, my sis texted me photos of her visit on openin day...

I had to go check it out the very next day...

Better late than never this post.  I'll be doing the bakery in a separate post.

When you walk in, there is an in-house bakery to the right. There is also one Chinese steam table eatery and no food court. There are only two tables near the bakery so there isn't really a big dining area like at the 2nd location of Ranch 99 on Balboa Ave (that post still hasn't gone up as well).

Roasted duck like at the other locations.

Black silky chicken was interesting...

There was a variety of game meat:

I found this rather amusing.

Really? Did they have to incorporate the word 'anus'???

These curries were dirt cheap (less than $3). I bought one for me and the other two for Mr. TJ and La Ley (along with a can of coconut milk). What I liked was that there were no artificial ingredients.

It was nice to see a lot of Filipino products here was well.

Sauces galore:

It's good to have choices.

As for the produce, they had some good opening weekend specials that my sister and parents took advantage of. I didn't get too many fresh items that visit. I was just looking around.

MSG, a staple in every Asian household (including ours when growing up).

Later that week, I paid another visit with Bert...

.99 reusuable bag...we bought a few fresh items (vegetables and Asian pears) along with a few pastries.

Surprisingly, no small children or old people tormenting and whacking the crabs.

Filipino meats in the freezer:

Good with rice and eggs for breakfast.

Frozen bananas:

These can be used for ginataan (a soupy cooked dessert made with coconut milk and served sometimes with glutinous rice balls, taro and banana chunks).

There was also frozen durian! I will have to pass on this fruit...

I'm so glad this place is finally open. I don't have to drive up to Kearny Mesa for certain items.  This store, along with Island Pacific Seafood Market will make my weekend grocery shopping so much easier especially when seeking my favorite Filipino vegetables and specialty ingredients.
