Mary's Donuts is here to stay until the beginning of February.
Backtrack to late last year when Mary's announced they would have their last day on December 24th. The news of the end was near for quite awhile actually but the date wasn't "finalized" until late last year.
In early December, one of the teachers gifted our department a box of these delights from Mary's (she lives in Santee, a recent transplant from Chula Vista). She actually asked me ahead of time if we would want them in case any of us were on "diets". Obviously I said, "yes, we want them", "no, none of us are dieting" and "could you please make sure to get a French cruller" (heh heh), which she did.
Only one of them which I snagged since I'm the first in every morning and had first dibs. No chocolate bar or glazed or whatever, the cruller it was for me.
It may be lighter in density than the other donuts, but this was it for me. My last taste of a Mary's Donut.

WTH? First, it was Dec 24th, then prior to that date, they announced they would be "open on the 26th", which wasn't explicitly their "last day" and now this announcement. Mmmm...okay then. I guess I can still attempt a visit then.

I was also gifted a coupon from Cathy for the new Mary's which will relocate to an empty storefront near GTM on nearby Carlton Hills Blvd. I definitely plan to use that when it becomes effective in March of this year. I was planning on stopping by a few weekends ago but was warned by Cathy that the lines were long and that the store was only doing "plain" donuts (same kinds but different toppings; none of the specialty ones like crullers). This was from first hand experience after she and her husband stopped in several times that particular week during different times of the day. So we did not go after all.
Knowing that Mary's has a slight reprieve...I think I do want to make a stop one of these weekends.

Nice post. It's like a long goodbye. Noticed that someone has already put the thousands of photos from the walls into easily relocatable frames. I'm thinking the owners of the land don't really have a sale of it in place because of the gas station and various laws regarding disposal, etc.
I will have to put up my new post since I visited the other day. And yes, crullers were there, so yay.
I hope they put up the old photos. I also hope they will still continue to paint the windows with seasonal themes.
