Hawthorn Coffee

This is a bit of a "late" post, but then again many of my posts have been in the queu for quite awhile, including our Summer 2014 road trip (which I promise to finish soon)...

So here is a fairly new coffee shop located in University Heights...

It's off Adams and 30th and across the street from Antique Row Cafe. The green vintage tile and the handmade benches were inviting...

When we went a few days before the new year, they'd only been open for two weeks.

The owners are a father and son team. It's pretty sparse in here and there isn't a lot of seating.

Their menu:

Flying Goat Coffee is from the Bay Area and we would have gone there during our Summer Anniversary NorCal roadtrip had we stayed in Santa Rosa (there are also cafes in Healdsburg), but didn't. Parliament Chocolate is from Redlands and I believe it's the same chocolate that Bert had in his mocha at Stell Coffee.

Our sample of the Cascara given by one of the baristas whom I recognized as the former owner of the now defunct Ladies & Gentlemen Coffee shop. He is also one of the owners of Foxy Coffee, a new microroastery; his wife whom I met at L&G works at Heartwork in Mission Hills (another great coffee shop).

Our drinks and TC on Snapchat.

Parliament Mocha - The chocolate is named after an artisanal chocolate company located in Redlands, CA.  Bert really enjoyed this as it was very smooth and rich tasting.

TC's Cascara - a carbonated ea made with the skins of the coffee cherry. She had something similar at Blue Bottle Coffee in Echo Park (those posts will be forthcoming). She only had two sips and already she could feel the caffeine's effects. We ended up taking it home and freezing it for later. It was a pretty strong drink, even as a bubbly tea.

My Macchiato - This was probably one of THE best macchiatos I've ever had. It was so smooth and the milk so frothy. No sugar needed at all. It's taken me a little over a year to appreciate how real coffee should taste.

Meanwhile outside...

Awww...this dog was so anxious for his master to come back out.

It's a cute little shop and I hope they last!

I just want to add that the owner is a very nice man. He found one of my earrings outside, must have perused the clientele and figured out it was mine and gave it to me. It was a very unique pair that I bought from a friend of mine who makes steampunk-inspired earrings. I didn't even notice it had fallen, of course, the day which I didn't wear plastic backings for my hooks.

I've been meaning to come back here again to try their cold brew on nitro and maybe, just maybe that Parliament mocha for myself...

Funny as I don't think I've ever ordered a Macchiato before. I usually order a latte for some reason. Is there a reason you prefer the Macchiato? I'm so curious about the one here if you say it's one of the best you've had so far. I've been using no sugars (real or artificial) in my coffee for a little under a year now and it's getting easier. I agree that it makes you appreciate good coffee when you get it. Friend has been trying to get me to drink my coffee black which has been really hard. That was awesome the owner found the earring and took the time to find you!

Hi Faye
I've briefly mentioned in previous coffee shop posts that my preferred drink is the macchiato or Cortado (or if I'm in SF, the Gibraltar which is like a Cortado). I like these drinks because the ratio of espresso to cream is pretty small. The macchiato is 1:1; the cortado is 1:1.5. These are not the watered down drinks/swill that Charbucks offers nor are they over 4 oz. I can't handle those watery or milky coffee drinks that are 8 oz or more. The size of the macchiato and/or Cortado is just right for me.

I don't like coffee black either. It's got to have some milk (regular or almond or if I'm desperate, soy).

Oops, I meant milk not cream.
