Super Twist and more from Mary's Donuts

Yesterday I met up with Cathy in her neck of the woods...

The choice of meeting place was convenient for her but also served a purpose for me...

Mary's Donuts, an institution in Santee...

Going in the morning at 8 am ensures a wide selection of freshly made donuts. It was quite busy inside with workers bustling about, employees frying up donuts and customers like myself trying to figure out what I wanted.

I ended up getting two kinds of blueberry donuts (both cake, one frosted with sprinkles), a fruit burrito for TC, a maple bar for Bert and a Super Twist for all of us to share later at home. This was like the Donut Man's famed Tiger Tail, but instead of being long, it was shorter but weighed about the same. This was a seriously heavy donut.

I was almost tempted to get their apple fritter which are about as big as a dinner plate, I kid you not, but opted for this equally big confection.

We still have some of it left! I picked off some of the hard glazed crunchy parts (usually the first to go especially if I get a fritter).  This is quite a challenge, but I wanted for us to try something new.

Previous visit to Mary's Donuts:
September 2014

Meanwhile, it was nice to get see Cathy so soon, after our quick meetup at Beef 'n Bun late last year. I was finally able to give her all of the calendars I picked up from my visits to various ethnic markets as well as give her belated Xmas gift. The day was still young! I was going to meet up with the Educator GF's later than morning for KD's belated birthday celebration...

It was so nice to see you and for you to see the Saturday/ weekend crowd at Mary's! The East County version of 85C in a way. Thanks so much for everything, so much is fascinating and good.

You can never go wrong with Mary's Donuts! Still one of my favorites in San Diego. We haven't been in awhile actually. I need my cruller fix soon.

Cathy - Thanks for meeting up! And wowzers, was that place jumping! As soon as one car left in the lot, another took it's place immediately! There are nice folks who work at Mary's.

Mary - Damn right! I totally forgot to get crullers but that will have to be another much needed, heh heh, visit! :)

Even though it's crowded in the morning, you get the best selection. The line moves fast too. I highly recommend their crullers and cream puffs!
