New flavors at Hogetsu

A recent training brought me to the area...

where I had a sudden craving for mochi sweets since it was so close by...

I hadn't been here in quite awhile and it was time for a revisit...

My box of 8. Some are repeat flavors and a few are new to me.

This was new, a chocolate confection. The coating itself was not pure chocolate, but chocolate mixed with the dough-like coating. It was on the drier side and the filling was not white bean but something else...It had a crumbly texture and was like marzipan but not almond tasting. I'm wracking my brain trying to figure this out. I'll have to ask Mrs. Takeda about this one next time I'm in.

I liked this and wished I had bought another!

Turns out I tried this one before. I was attracted to the rice paper wrap. The previous time I bought this, the design was different. This was a heavily powdered with cinnamon confection. Bert really liked this one.

There were two kinds of these cake slices. The outer covering was like a sponge cake while the filling was either red or green yokan. This was actually pretty good. I didn't expect the yokan to be so sweet.

These are TC's favorite, the mochi squares. We've tried the lemon and orange squares in the past. This time they had strawberry, banana and coffee!

The fruit flavored squares had that  alcohol "extract" taste to them, especially the banana. It reminded me of banana flavored candies. I still liked it.

This was so pretty. We've tried variations of this before as well. This was filled with white bean.

The white one in the front was filled with white bean AND chestnut. This was new.

Although you can't really see it in the "innards" shot, the chestnuts were chopped into small chunks. This was one of my favorites from that box.

Previous visit to Hogetsu:
February 2015

I had a nice conversation with Mrs. Takeda. She said that they've had the shop open for more than 30 years. I asked her if anyone would take over if they retired and she said no one wants to do this craft anymore, especially the younger generation. She said this was a dying art and sadly, she is right. I hope that they don't retire anytime soon!

Gosh I love this place so much. We're hardly ever down in this area though but your post makes me want to go down for another little visit. It is sad that no one wants to do it anymore, sniff sniff. That chocolate-covered one sounds really interesting! I want to try it.
