and thought I'd drop by La Concha bakery...
I actually wanted their empanadas and choriza tortas, but they were out. I also wanted to see if they had Rosca de Reyes cakes, which of course they did because today is The Feast of Three Kings (also known as The Epiphany, which celebrates the coming of the Magi). The traditional feast day is January 6th. As a Filipino Catholic, I didn't grow up celebrating this day with this traditional (for the Mexican culture) bread, known as Rosca de Reyes (ring of the Kings).
Since they didn't have what I wanted, I left La Concha empty handed but not before snapping a few pix of their Roscas. Their small is $15! Two years ago, I bought a small from Pancho Villa market for $6.99.
At another nearby Mexican bakery, Chico's, I saw that they were also selling roscas.
Their largest size was $40, medium was around $20 something. The smallest was $13. I splurged and got the small so we could enjoy a rosca this year (we skipped out on it last year).
Their roscas are topped with sugar paste and dried fruit strips. Some places have fancy dried fruits on top (cherries or dates or even figs). This was on the "plainer" side.

I wonder who will get the "baby" figurine inside!
I enjoyed a small slice just a few minutes ago and it was "baby free". My piece has a few raisins in them and I assume the raisins are scattered throughout the cake as well. Bert will enjoy his piece later with coffee while TC plans to just eat the fruit strips.

I still have a few days left of vacation to enjoy although I haven't been going out much. Driving in the rain isn't a lot of fun and as we San Diegans know, it's pretty much going to be a wet and rainy week. Hope everyone is dry and safe!

We saw only mediums at Pancho Villa this year and didn't look further; staying close to home with all of this weather. It was really good- eggy, with figs and the fruit 'strips' were more jelly like when the bread piece was microwaved ( also very jelly flavored: pineapple and strawberry).
I didn't even know they had roscas at Costco and for super cheap too.
