What's shakin'....

Located at the former location of Pizzeria Uno at the Chula Vista mall, it has since been resurrected as Shakey's Pizza.

Aaah, memories of the old Shakey's on Broadway when my mom used to steal sneak out fried chicken drumsticks wrapped in napkins. Try doing that with pizza slices too!

But no, this post is not about the joys of surreptitiously spiriting away food...

No, we were here for TC's bday party with her friends. We allowed her to invite a few friends for a pizza party and to hang out at the games/arcade area. The kids took over one whole table while the parents (the few who stayed instead of just dropping of their kid) hung out at our own table.

The menu was a buffet which included different types of pizza, fried chicken, mojos (thick cut and battered fried potatoes), sides such as mac and cheese, mashed potatoes and gravy, penne pasta and sauce, as well as a salad bar.

It's not gourmet quality but it's not Little Caesar's either. Hey, the kids were just happy to see each other and hang out.

The workers were pretty good with replenishing the pizza slices. They had Hawaiian, sausage, barbecue chicken, pepperoni (not pictured in order)...

My sampler plate - two slices of pizza, one fried chicken drumstick, a tiny bit of mac and cheese (it was too mushy for me), one bell pepper ring, and a few slices of those mojos. The pizza was thin crust and tasted better than the pizza from John's Incredible Pizza (where we went for TC's after promotion party with her classmates). The buffet was $7.50 per person (not including drinks); $5 if your kid is under 10 (all were age 11 and up). The salad bar was not as extensive as Soup Plantation. They had iceberg lettuce and also caesar salad. I skipped on the lettuce greens and just had bits and pieces of stuff (baby corn, peas, garbanzos).

A few more slices - the bbq chicken and the Hawaiian and another mojo slice. Whatever they batter those with, well, it must be like crack because I really wanted more but had to stop myself. I don't remember eating those mojos as a kid, but I just might be back just to have those crisp potato slices!

Like her cake from the week before, this one was also from Hans and Harry's. We stuck twelve multicolored candles on it and watched the wax melt as her friends sang their rendition of the Happy Birthday song...

The cake was Pineapple Coconut. The inner filling was buttercream with pineapple and coconut.  The fruit garnish on top of the cake didn't look like pineapple to me, but apparently, it was. I thought they were mango cubes but that wouldn't make sense if the cake was pineapple coconut, right? This was a frozen cake and we had to defrost it four hours in advance. It was still firm and cold (but not frozen frozen) by the time Bert sliced it up. Everyone seemed to like the cake and thought it was filled with ice cream (but it wasn't).

Hans and Harry's also makes a passionfruit mousse cake that we want to try in the future, but it is only available through special order. The bakery doesn't have ready made passionfruit mousse cakes on hand (perhaps because of the exotic ingredient?) but I wish they did.

Bert's birthday is coming up next and he is eyeing the other dome shaped bombe cake that they offer! Stay tuned for that! Hopefully his birthday this year will not have a blackout like last year's fun-fest!

Wow, Shakey's Pizza. It was the very first pizza parlor I've ever been to as a kid. Shakey's and Farrell's, those were the two for birthday celebrations.

I totally remember Farrell's. That went the way of the dodo bird in the late 80's. Both had that "old time" feel. our parents were too cheap to have our bdays there though. we had parties at home or if we were lucky, at mcd's! ha ha.
