Return to Lillian's

OMG, can it be?

Yes, it is...the return of the Canada posts! We still haven't left the Island yet either, but this day would be our last before we embarked upon the epic road trip with C and her family...

After our visit to Mum's Bakery and drooling over their butter tarts, we made a quick stop to a local First Nations store...

Lillian's Crafts is a store that specializes in hand crafted items from the M'Chigeeng First Nation Tribe in Manitoulin Island (the "M" is silent). The last time we went here, the quill baskets museum was in a separate room. It was now moved to the front. The quills are from porcupines and the amount of craftmanship that goes into these baskets is amazing.

The store also sells a lot of First Nation jewelry (I bought a few items as gifts and souvenirs), make it yourself crafts, clothing, and sacred items (dried herbs and native grasses to burn).

These beaded hair combs were quite pretty...

Hmmmm, that's C's daughter holding some sort of furry tail thing.

The necklace cord was made of soft deerskin. There were a few necklaces made up of broken shells and porcupine quills, along with beads.

Lillian was there that day and it was nice chatting with her as she rang me up.

C wanted to take us to a few other places that day before we headed out on our trip. Her husband was working the farm and would be setting things up before leaving for the week.

Previous visits to Lillian's
Summer of 2010 - The First Visit where we also went to Briday Veil Falls (among our many stops that day) and our second visit where we also went to the Ojibwe Cultural Foundation.

One thing that I noticed while on the Island, people here are not anal about the time at all! There is no sense of urgency or a rush to do things. Driving to get somewhere could take half an hour on the island. People must be pretty patient, unlike me, an antsy SoCal chick who's always looking at her watch and wondering what I'd be doing next. I had to learn to take it down several notches while here and just relax and let things be...
