El Super

I've been wanting to go here FOREVER it seems.

It wasn't too long ago this used to be a Mervyn's...

My Mexican friends like going here for the great deals on their produce but would rather avoid going here on weekends because it's always PACKED. Well, we got lucky today since it was Labor Day and everyone was probably out at the beach or the parks.

I didn't take too many photos inside but it was like Christmas in here! I could have spent waaaay more time here just looking at all of their products like their snacks, candy, sauces, and spices. There is an in-house tortilleria and panaderia...

Plus a cold deli area near the tortilla area where you can buy cueritos (pickled pork skin), and various salsas...

along with more salsas and ready made mariscos ready to be eaten on top of crispy tostadas. Man, if we didn't already have chicken planned for lunch, we would have bought some mariscos!

They also had a huge meat counter that I will have to explore next time. I'd like to get pre-marinated carne asada for a future weekend lunch.

After we paid for our items, we headed for the fresh kitchen area (located in the front, right when you enter) to get some ready made guacamole ($2.77 for a 1 lb tub) and salsa fresca (also $2.77).

And riiiiight before we were about to walk out the door, we also saw this:

TC was eyeing the watermelon drink...

They had tamarind, melon, horchata, and jamaica for $1.29 for a 16 oz. cup.

The agua melon was very refreshing on this super warm day!

Can you see the watermelon seed? Now that's fresh!

Below, some of the items we bought: Oaxaca cheese (which tastes just like string cheese). Loved the mildness of this cheese. It's normally sold as a ball, but this was cut into rough strips.

We got two kinds of tortillas - the green one was made from Nopal (cactus) and the other kind was just corn.

Here's our fresh guacamole, salsa and chips. One thing about these chips (called Totopos), they were terrible. They were too thick and hard. We ended up buying another type of tortilla chips at Fresh and Easy.

The fresh salsa was delicious but I ended up picking out most of the chopped jalapenos.

There is no local website, but here is the corporate one: elsupermarkets.com

It was time to fire up the grill which hardly sees that much action...
