Cafe 21 with Astroboi + Hawthorn Coffee, Mission Thrift Store and the Incredible Cheesecake Company

Fall break is for meeting up with friends...

in this case, Astroboi and with his choice of breakfast venue...

which was Cafe 21 on Adams. As is our custom, we went super early to avoid crowds and t his time, sat in a far corner (near the grapevine covered area). Pomegranate hibiscus tea in the cool tea dispenser was enjoyed by my good friend. You place the dispenser filled with steeping loose leaf tea on top of your drinking vessel and press the handle when ready. You have to be careful not to press to hard or else everything will dump out too fast.

Our breakfast - short rib sandwich (sans the horrific bleu cheese per my request) and turkey benedict for him. Our server mistakenly gave us both the housemade chips (I actually ordered a potato cake, which came later).

This was like a Thanksgiving benedict since there were cranberries in here as well. The green stuff on top? Pea shoots. I thought the housemade chips, while crisp and light, were a little too burnt. They also weren't seasoned so no bueno on that.

I wanted the short rib again in some shape or form. I remember ordering the short rib burger for my birthday several months ago and forgetting my takeout box.  Bread here was thick cut and sourdoug. Innards had fresh lettuce, tomato, red onion and chipotle aioli. The creamy potato cake was just as good as the last time. I ended up eating my sandwich deconstructed. The meat was so juicy and tender.

We reparked on a side street off 30th after breakfast for my caffeine fix, passing by the Leon Produce mural, which is also next to Senor Mango's, a place that KD really likes for their smoothies and chamango drinks.

Hawthorn Coffee was our next destination.

I normally don't order mochas; this is Bert's drink.  I was feeling it for a mocha today and didn't ask to have the milk subbed out (uh oh).

We ended up sitting outside. I always feel so self conscious inside a place where it's deathly quiet at time since most people in there aren't really conversing, but instead, wrapped up in their laptops.  Plus we could speak as loudly as we wanted and curse without disapproving glances, ha ha. Oh who am I kidding, I would do that anywhere and not really care.  But about Astroboi's drink...this was the Golden Oolong tea, served in the hipster Mason jar with a cute striped paper straw (better for the environment I know but shitty and waterlogged after 10 minutes).

His golden tea looked pretty actually. It was also unsweetened which he prefers.

Later while driving around Normal Heights, I spied an older apartment complex with a vintage architectural block wall.

We stopped by Mission Outreach Thrift Store since it was across from our eventual dessert stop.

I didn't really take photos inside. There wasn't a big selection of stuff like at Goodwill but rather a hodge podge of items. The lady working there was really friendly. This is what I ended up buying because I was attracted to the domed aspect of this faceted crystal dish. I later looked up what it was online and it is used for butter.  Oooh, fancy.   Bert said it would look cool with mini scooped butter balls. I might just do that for an upcoming dinner function...

Top off...

Across the street was the storefront for All County Fire; they sell fire extinguishers and alarm panels. Their murals are pretty eye catching as well.  Look at that cat.

Clever.

I had a coupon to use at The Incredible Cheesecake Company. Astroboi had never been.  I got three slices that day for the price of two (buy one get one). Prices were now $4, up from $3.75 (before they used to be $3.50).

The triangular trio:

Dutch apple pie (this was new for me and I got it with Bert's tastes in mind), followed by the Merv Griffin (triple chocolate with chocolate chips) and The Naughty Hula (coffee with coconut and macadamia nuts) for Astroboi and his BF.

The cooler kept things fairly firm.  It was getting pretty hot by the time we left to head back home.

Next week, work would start up again and my lunches will be relegated to eating in the confines of my office (I dislike going to the lounge).  I had to enjoy my free time while I could.
