This visit brought Bert and I back to Hawthorn on Adams...
They now had an actual menu board. Just the other month, it was their older handwritten one.

The Shake & Boogie is what I wanted while Bert opted for the Dark Chocolate Mocha since I had raved about it from my last outing with the Educator GF's.

The Shake and Boogie which consists of a vanilla ice cream base from Mariposa, along with FOUR espresso shots, a dab of honey and as pictured, chocolate ganache. Their older IG post dated February 19 (which prompted our visit) did NOT have the chocolate on the sides. On the other hand, our S&B drink also did NOT have the dark chocolate honeycomb on the top either. Perhaps that photo was their first version and it was still evolving.

I was hoping to have some of that chocolate covered honeycomb. This drink, I must say was excellent. It was very smooth, rich and as warned by the barista, would "keep you up for hours". He even said, "I hope you find something to keep you busy later because you are going to be awake for awhile", haha. Sadly, he was right. But it was worth it.
Another coffee visit was recently at Duet on one of our "morning dates".

The folks here are always so friendly. I asked one of the owners (a very sweet young lady) why they chose Temple Roasters for their beans. She said it was because she used to live in Sacramento and really likes their products. When I mentioned we would be going to the Capitol soon for a visit, she also recommended that we visit Insight Coffee (so we shall!).

My cortado and Bert's Dark chocolate mocha with almond milk. Bert's been obsessed with dark chocolate mochas lately if you couldn't tell.

Loved the presentation. Their drinks are always on point here.

The cortado is the perfect ratio for me. More than a macchiato but way way less than a latte (I'm not a big fan of milky drin ks)

Three great concerts in the same month. I love Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders.

Plus cute decoration holdovers from Valentine's day, construction paper hearts.

During a recent visit to Cafe Virtuoso, Bert and I noticed that the building slated to be the new Roscoe's Chicken and Waffle had their sign flipped up. I wasn't sure if it was due to the recent storms where we experience high winds.

This is what it looked like in October last year.

(photo from my "Out with Cathy..." post, Dec. 2016)
It turns out that Roscoe's pulled out of the project and will be concentrating on their other locations. So basically San Diego got shafted and shunned.
We were here for drinks of course but also to check out the new mural on their west facing wall. During our last visit, the artist, MaryJhun Dandan (and also a barista at Cafe Virtuoso) was working on the design. Since then, it's been completed and looks fantastic - a botanical mural of 'coffee arabica', the coffee plant.

Bert's chocolate mocha (yes, again)...plus my espresso con panna.

As always, their drinks are on point.

A recent visit to Por Vida was precipitated by a new drink they were to debut that weekend...

Those paint drips are new!
This wall painting with the low riders is also new; gone is the shop that used to occupy this space. There is more seating now.

VoG on a cactus pad...

and on coffee cups.

Both of the coffees look the same which was a bit of a bummer.

Bert ordered a honey latte while I had their new Mazapan latte.

Mazapan is a type of Mexican candy; named after 'marzipan' which is almond based, Mazapan by de la Rosa is a peanut candy which you can find it at any Mexican market. It is a round pressed peanut powder disk wrapped in clear plastic with a vibrant red rose on it. It's one of my favorite Mexican candies and it was featured in this new drink. I have to say that the drink was overly sweet. I think they just dissolved the candy into the espresso and milk mixture, peanuts and all. There were bits of peanuts in the drink which gave it a tiny bit of texture. I wasn't feeling it for this drink. As for Bert's honey latte with almond milk, I liked it better than mine since it wasn't as super sweet.
That same morning we headed to Liberty Station. Bert hadn't been to Moniker before so we went here so I could get another coffee since I didn't really like the Mazapan latte...

The brewing company that used to be around the corner from Moniker was now gone.
Below, my macchiato with sparkling water and Bert's mocha with almond milk. This time I wasn't asked if I "knew my drink would be small". No condescending questions asked, thank goodness.

I like that double walled glass...

Bert's mocha was very smooth since it had housemade ganache.
