Coffee revisits: Cafe Virtuoso, Hawthorn, Moniker and Butler's

Just a consolidationm post of recent revisits to various coffee places...

Cafe Virtuoso in Barrio Logan is one of our favorites.

You may want to try this place in the near future especially since it is literally a few steps away from the new (and not yet built or opened) Roscoe's Chicken and Waffle...

Virtuoso had recently revamped its bar area.  As of the time of this writing, a lovely botanical wall painting  of the coffee plant is also now up. One of their baristas is also an artist, Mary Jun Dandan  (She was also the one who painted the steps at the now closed Upstart Crow Bookstore and Coffeehouse in Seaport Village; I remember that shop was so cute and quaint). The wall was not painted during the time of this visit in late November.

They now have a new and fab menu board. Cortado for me and a pourover for Bert.

Where we sat...

I had to wait for this to cool down and by that time, the latte art was starting to dissipate.

Our drinks were smooth and rich.  The coffee is always well done here.

I was in the area killing time before meeting up with a friend at a craft fair.  One of my stops was Hawthorn Coffee where I had their iced maple latte (with almond milk). The barista liked my lipstick color
Hers wasn't so bad either . It was by Kate Von D. The wierd shit I remember.

Great drink. Maple syrup does make coffee taste better. My Canadian friend would be proud.

I really like the green and black tile details for this Art Deco style building.

More recently, I was in Liberty Station with my same friend whom I met (along with her grown up daughter).  I was a bit pissed off after ordering my drink. When I requested a macchiato, the barista, some young dude, said, "You know that's a small drink right?" To which I replied stonily, "Yes, that's why I ordered it". I wonder if he says this to everyone who orders a macchiato.   He said, "I just want to make sure that you know" to which I said, "Yes, I'm aware of the sizes." OMFG.  My first visit here had the bitch barista who didn't want to answer my question about their pastries and now this guy.

Our trio of drinks which we enjoyed in the back patio where no one was because every table in here was occupied.

My friend's daughter's Chai latte:

My friend's salted caramal latte:

My SMALL MACCHIATO.

Gosh, I really wanted a fucking 16 oz monstrosity a la Starbucks with whipped cream and shit on top.

I know I've only been here twice, but had not so nice service both times.  Not sure if I want to give this place another chance. I don't need presuming and condescending idiots in my life.

The last few photos are from today when Bert and I made our way to Spring Valley. Ironically, I had an online coupon for Butler's but forgot to use it when we ordered our drinks. To add insult, we were also served our drinks in damn paper cups even though we were asked if we were staying there or taking it to go and we we did indicate we were staying.  Am I that much of a bitch?  Wait, don't answer that. But really now. Paper cups. I guess they don't want to wash cups that early in the morning (because we did get there at  6:15 am).

FUGLY.

Even fuglier.  The lids did serve a purpose. No need for latte art either, ha ha.

It rained heavily the night before but today would end up being a sunny day.

I still have that online coupon and yes, I still want to use it and I will remember to do so next time. But I'll also have to remind them that we would want to drink our coffee in an actual cup too, like the last time we were here.

Previous visit to Cafe Virtuoso
August 2015

Previous visit to Hawthorn
December 2016 - lemonade and coffee is NOT a good combination by the way

Previous visit to Butler's:
November 2016

There are some new coffee shops up north that I still haven't explored, although Bert and I did a good job this past few weeks. Going to North County is like going to the moon for me, but I am willing to make that trek in my search to try new places.
