we headed out in the darkness up to the Bay Area...
This would also mark our first road trip where TC drove for portion of the trip! Yes...TC is now an officially licensed driver! Where has the time gone! When I first started my blog, she was in kindergarten!

Before our eventual destination of Thane's home in El Cerrito, we planned our first major stop in Stockton, California, formerly the Asparagus Capitol of the World and a significant city in terms of Filipino American History (more detailed posts to follow).
Opened last October 2016, the Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS), Stockton Chapter houses the FANHS Museum. Twenty years in the making and it was finally here and only open on the weekends.

The current exhibit showcases half of the panels which we first saw back in 2010 at the San Francisco Library along with a few other exhibits highlighting the Filipino American experience specifically the "campos" of the Central Valley.

The other half of this exhibit's panels are in the Wing Luke Asian Museum in Seattle. It would be nice for the whole exhibit to be here in Stockton.
A few doors away from the FANHS Museum is this Filipino American owned and operated eatery. I loved the neon sign inside. This is a phrase you would hear at a Filipino household or a party.

"Let's eat!"
A few minutes away from both the museum and eatery was a block of three buildings, the last remnants of what used to be Little Manila. Blocks upon blocks of Filipino owned businesses and homes were torn down in the 1960's to make room for the freeway.

Although recently designated as a historic site, the buildings are run down and not open to the public, detailed posts about their history will follow in the upcoming weeks.
To get to El Cerrito, the GPS had us take the 4 to the 80. Talk about taking the long way through the boonies, but at least we were moving. We made it safely to Thane and family's home but first killed time on Solano Ave as well as a really interesting bead and curio shop on San Pablo Ave.
We were all too beat to go out again so Thane ordered Vietnamese...

He was excited to show us his rotating apple peeler, the better to make homemade apple tarts with!
Tomorrow, we would be exploring the views and places to eat...
