It's on the west side of Third Avenue before you hit Davidson Street.

and next to a streetwear store...
I had neglected to check the coffee shop hours and thus was bummed that they were closed (it was a Sunday).

I made a note to come back another time, presumably when they were open, duh.
One one of my days off, I went to The Nest for a quick coffee before taking my mom to her appointment. I noticed that a new mural was up (see that post here).

If I hadn't had breakfast already, I would have tried a waffle.

Their menu board for now. They aren't using real cups...yet. Macchiatos weren't on the menu yet either. I opted for a regular mocha which I asked for since I don't like Mexican mochas (due to the cinnamon).

The coffee shop is also an art gallery which features work by local artists some of which are students.

Their mini tables had burned in designs and the mini vases were covered with colorful printed designs.
My mocha below was served BURNING HOT and without a lid or a paper sleeve. I had to get it from the shelf on the adjacent wall. I was afraid I was going to spill it and give myself a third degree burn. I was a bit disappointed that the mocha looked like this. As I mentioned, it was FKG HOT HOT HOT and undrinkable for quite a while. It was also watery and tasted pedestrian. The coffee beans were from Industrial Grinds; the women from IG were the ones who trained the workers here (information gleaned during my visit and also by perusing The Nest on Third's IG using my Columbo like research skills).

Not a great introduction to their drinks, but hey, that's what subsequent visits are for which brings us to today. We went here before taking TC to her driver's test; we also noticed that the Monster Mural was replaced with another colorful mural (not by the same artists and not as quirky either).

There was now a circular sign above the storefront and their address sign was also changed up (the font was different).

We met Lulu that morning, one of the baristas (she might be an owner; I'll need to find out next time) and also a chocolatier.

Banana iced mocha? Yes please.

The menu was a bit changed up as well. They still are using only paper cups for now, according to Lulu. They also aren't making proper macchiatos yet as well so I opted NOT to get one until they did start making them properly and with real cups. I noticed the macchiato was a new addition; they also spelled cappuccino correctly this time as well.

While Lulu made our drinks, we took a peek at the space in the back. The artwork from High Tech High students was still there along with a bin full of records. As I leafed through them, I saw quite a few that I already owned such as U2's "Under a Blood Red Sky" (mentioned in my previous blogaversary post; it's been 11 years already), Boston's self-titled debut album and even Prince's "Around the World in a Day". We found out that the records were also for sale, but at $10 a pop for records that were once discarded like trash after the advent of the CD format in the early 90's, I couldn't bring myself to pay that much for an LP. I still have many of mine at home anyways...but still, it was cool to see records making a comeback.

Released in 1985, "Around the World in a Day", was Prince and the Revolution's follow up to the hugely successful "Purple Rain" album and soundtrack. As evidenced by the cover art (which was a gatefold sleeve by the way), the psychedelic design also echoed the musical style Prince was exploring at the time.

This is also the album with his hit single, "Raspberry Beret", which was released May 1985. I'll never forget it because my good friend Astroboi called me up in the afternoon after we both had gotten home from school.
"OMG, turn on MTV now! It's the World Premiere of "Raspberry Beret"!!!!" he yelled into the phone. Of course, this was when MTV showed actual music videos instead of lame reality shows.
Astroboi and I both watched the video excitedly while on the phone and after it was over, talked about how cool of a video it was and OMG, did you see Prince's soon to be famous blue suit with clouds?!?!?
I wish I could link the video but the only one I could find has the sound muted since the song is copyrighted and Prince's people are pretty vigilant about keeping his songs off youTube.

Our trio of drinks:

My banana iced mocha which was really refreshing on what ended up being a really warm day.

Bert's Mexican Mocha which he really enjoyed. It wasn't served burning hot either. I had a sip of it and it wasn't too bad.

TC's lavender soda (I used a special effects filter with a "ray of light" effect). She said the flavor wasn't to strong and it was a lovely color as well.

Lulu's handmade chocolates were on sale, two pieces for $3. We bought two different kinds and enjoyed them later that day. Bert chose the Dharma cups because they had PB while I chose the Karmaline zests. It was hard to decided which flavors to get because each and every kind were different.

The wall also had new art pieces, which were for sale.

I liked this one the best.

I hope they step up their coffee game with the espresso based drinks and maybe even latte art. I'm looking forward to that day.

We'll definitely be back. I'm glad the drink for my second visit was much better than my first.

As for TC's driving test, we waited nearly three hours in the DMV's driving test line and found out, while in line, that the lone instructor who showed up (two were out sick and one was on vacation, WTF DMV) ended up having to leave on a medical emergency (insert angry red face insterspersed with poo emojis).
There were six cars head of us and they ended up leaving and so did we after we were told to come back the next day. So....this was a waste of a morning especially for Bert who took tghe day off. Alas, TC will have to return tomorrow to take her driver's test. It's hard to believe that TC, who is 16 and a half already, will officially be driving soon.
