I recently picked up a couple of packets of Old Bay crab cake seasoning packets (only $1.50!) from I don't remember where...
After having had these awesome crab cakes at The Fish Company in Coronado, I thought we would give these a shot, except for my deep hatred of making fried food, this probably wouldn't have been made at all. Lucky for me, Bert offered to make it. The recipe on the back of the packet is pretty easy. We looked online for other recipes but they involved stuff like Worcestershire sauce (which we don't have), parsley and a few other ingredients we would have to rustle up.

Nope, the packet had it all. Just add some mayo, the seasoning packet and that's it. So there it is, in a bowl. One pound of lump crab meat, courtesy of Costco, which Bert (who is pretty meticulous, in a good way) shaped into ten perfect balls. He didn't have to fry the damn things. Instead, they went on our table top griddle that we won at some white elephant gift exchange a few Christmas parties ago.

Nicely browned not burnt.

Salad was spinach greens, cut up cucumbers, beets, tomatoes, corn, sunflower seeds and yellow raisins. Colorful. The tartar sauce was just mayo mixed with sweet pickle relish. The special drinks were watermelon mint red tea (bought on clearance from when our Fresh 'n Easy was selling everything at 50% off because NOW IT'S GONE AND I WANT TO CRY INTO A CORNER, not really, but yeah) for TC and Casal Garcia Vinho Verde for me 'n Bert.

Lovely crabby lumps.

I bought this bottle of vinho verde in late 2013 at the United Portuguese S.E.S. Market.

It was still good and very refreshing!
Until next year for Seafood Friday...
It was in the low 80's this afternoon. It finally cooled down, whew.
I'm so NOT looking forward to going back to work on Monday. OMG, I hope I remember my passwords, haha. But seriously, after two weeks of enjoying Spring Break, it will be back to the grind. Graduation can't come soon enough!

Yum, the crab cakes look good! I love old bay seasoning but never tried buying and making my own crab cakes. That's too bad about your F&E! I heard a bunch of them closed. I'm feeling really lucky the one near me isn't one of them (I went to check right after I heard!). I go to mine all the time for emergency ingredients I'm missing for a recipe.
I'm so glad Bert decided to take this on! The crab cakes were so meaty and the seasoning was not overwhelming so the flavor of he crab shine through.
I am so bummed that our Fresh and easy is gone. I really hate Ralph's so this forces me to go all the way to Sprouts or Trader Joe's in Eastlake.
Oh man those crab cakes look good and low carb. I saw the carb count on the back of the packet and it seems pretty low! It's hard to find crab cakes these days with little to no fillers so I like this recipe alot. Have you tried the crab meat from Trader Joes? I'm always scared to buy crab meat as my last experience proved for fishy smelling and gray looking crab meat :(
Hi Faye, yeah, the carbs are pretty low for these. This crab from Costco was pretty meaty and fresh.
I haven't tried the Trader Joe's canned crab. I am usually leery of buying crab in a can because it usually tastes metallic and looks grey and gross like the kinds from Asian stores.
Mmm, I love me some crab cakes! There's not much too them, really. I prefer them to be pan fried rather than deep fried. Tastes better and you don't feel too much like a glutton that way. Hah! Aww, your F&E is gone! Mostly I just go to mine before work to get snacks or water. I noticed the prices are higher at F&E now. I went to Vons instead yesterday and a few things I bought were like a $1 cheaper at Vons. What?!
Dammit, I hate that my F&E is gone. I used to be able to go there in a pinch and now I can't
I hate Ralphs.
