Here we are traveling north on the 5 near Balboa Park while an airplane flies overhead...

I love this time of year...seeing the purple blossoms is a sure harbinger of springtime in San Diego..
We managed to find a "secret" non-metered spot (one of about 4) on the northern end of India Street. It was still quite early in the morning, like around 8:30'ish...Just around the corner was the second location of what is considered one of the best coffee shops in San Diego, Bird Rock Coffee Roasters.

Their menu is simple, as a good coffee place should be. I had the cortado while Bert had a mocha with soy.

I liked the teal blue and white accents and the minimal decor...

Our espresso drinks:

Quite beautiful to look at, eh, but it tasted as good as it looked.

Succulents. Why am I not surprised.

Bert's mocha with soy (OMG, cute cup alert!):

We enjoyed our coffees very much. Mine was so smooth I didn't need to add any sugar. There was enough milk in it to give it a creamy taste.
Just outside the window was this unfettered view of Juniper & Ivy, a restaurant that we have yet to try, but plan to do so eventually.

It was still pretty early and we had plenty of time for our "morning date"...

We haven't been to Bird Rock's La Jolla location yet but I'm fine with this one in Little Italy. We hope to make a return visit in the near future to enjoy their other offerings.
As we strolled down Kettner near Grape we heard some honking. Like frantic honking. We didn't look to see who it was since we didn't think it was directed towards us. As we crossed the street, we heard someone yell Bert's name.
It was Tatonka. I actually flipped him off while giving him a smile. Someone else was in the passenger seat. I couldn't see who. We later found out he was dropping off his parents at the airport and yes, his mom saw me flip the bird (hangs head in shame). I was mortified but Tatonka later told me she thought it was funny. We were both freaked out by the honking and how random it was for us to see our friend during vacation.
Our next stop would be southwards along Kettner at a new food hall...

Hey CC - This is our favorite place for a cup. The Missus loves that Yemeni and I just got a pound of the last batch for a while. Kind of pricey at $42/lb....but it makes a nice pour-over
Hi Kirk, I know I remember you mentioning it in a previous post and that the pourover was $9. They do make great coffee here!!
We drove past this Bird Rock just last weekend; never realized it was right there. This location or La Jolla will be a stop for us very soon...staycationing again. You could do a whole blog of just coffee places...
Hi cathy, yes, I've been on a coffee kick. I've graduated from frou frou blended drinks to actual hot drinks. I will porbably do a coffee post with links to all of the coffee shops visited.
I loooooove that cup. It's so adorable!
This place's reputation as having the best coffee is well deserved. And yes, cute cup!
