Seafood Friday #3 - The Fish Company

Another beautiful San Diego sunset...

as seen while heading west on the 905...We were dropping off TC for a youth group function and were off to dinner. Last week we tried the new Crisp Fish and Chips for our Lenten Friday meal. Tonight, we chose a place in Coronado...

that we'd seen last year when we had gelato at a nearby shop in the same complex, which is called The Crown Sbops. I remember seeing what looked like a really tiny restaurant (we soon found out they had an outdoor patio (which is enclosed and recently remodeled). I was fascinated by the curved wall and wondered if this was one of the original buildings, as this complex has been around since the late 1920's (see historical article here which shows the complex through the decades including the history of the Fish Company's former tenants).
I thought it was so neat to know that this spot used to be a popular burger place/drive in (judging from the nostalgic comments from the aforementioned article).

Pardon the craptastic shot (the menu was outside and I didn't bother taking pix of the menu inside):

The space inside is small. The Fish Company serves a mixture of American and Japanese food with an emphasis of seafood.   The owners greeted us warmly and said we could sit wherever we wanted, inside or at their outdoor patio. I didn't want to be cold so we sat inside at the only table for two.  The folks who greeted us turned out to be Tasna and Richard Carlquist. Tasna is a native Thai; they also own the neighboring Swadee Thai restaurant (which used to be Perkins Bookstore). Both of them were so very nice and welcoming.

As soon as we saw the menu outside, Bert knew he wanted to try the crabcakes. I found out later that the recipe was handed down from Richard's mother who used to live in Baltimore.  I had the grilled scallops. Bert's plate came with coleslaw, a buttered biscuit and salad (which was swapped out instead of fries). It was on the pricier side ($17.95), this being Coronado and all, but he thought it was worth it because his two crabcakes were VERY MEATY and had pretty much NO FILLER at all. It was seasoned lightly with herbs and so very delicious. The little container held homemade ginger dressing which we really liked.

Just look them crab cakes yo.

Yes, more o' this.  This was pretty fresh tasting.

My scallops were pretty juicy and meaty as well. They were a dollar less than Bert's entree, still pricy. Maybe if I got five (or even six) scallops, it would have been more worth it. I skipped the rice (which came with a housemade warm garlic sauce) but finished the salad and scallops. The lady was so nice and everytime she would check in on us, she even offered to give us more salad and rice.

Even though it wasn't that crowded inside (there were more folks having their dinner on the patio outside), we liked not having a crowded and noisy place to enjoy our seafood dinner.

They do not have a website but here are the reviews from that four lettered site along with tripadvisor as well as this rather informative article, "The Fish Company is a seafood delight", Coronado Eagle & Journal, July 24, 2014

Dessert would be next door and since it was a Friday, I thought I'd get coffee, which I normally don't drink at night...
