I had some coupons to use and decided to try to kill three or four birds with one stone...

In this stripmall with a "wide variety" of services...
You know, get your nails "did", buy some ammo, maybe get your back adjusted and have some lunch while yer at it. This place had it all.

Sandwich Bags Deli was our destination. It was pretty early but a few regulars were already there.

Notice his hours? The owner (a super nice guy by the way who worked his way up in food service since high school up to now all over the US) bought this shop ten years ago and wanted to make his day end early, hence 3 pm. He told us he lives in North Park and likes the scene over there but also enjoys providing the best sandwiches and service he can offer here in Santee.
Here are their menu options...

I wanted the Turkey Blueberry listed on the white board; Bert chose the Pastrami from the black board.

The owner was a chatty and friendly man. He was so cheerful and positive.

Very informational these...

Our two sandwiches, both of which came with a pickle spear...

Bert's Pastrami (on traditional rye) with mustard, cheese (forgot what kind) and sauerkraut. It was so fresh and pretty packed. Delicious this was and I don't even like mustard!

My Turkey Blueberry with arugula and cheddar. This sandwich totally reminded me of the awesome sandwich I had at the SD Soup Shoppe in North Park.

Here is a photo for comparison:

Yes, this was so %$@# good!

Next to the SD Soup Shoppe sandwich, the one runs a close second. Both of our sandwiches were excellent. The portion was just right. The bread was grilled with BUTTER. Yes, it's fattening but the aroma and flavor really made our sandwiches so much...MORE.

Keen to maximize our time in Santee, we headed off to our three other destinations (two hopefully in one fell swoop)...

Butter plus a fry pan are the only items you need to grill anything...but I digress...there are a bunch of sandwich places in Santee/at the edge of El Cajon now that I think of it. Bert's sandwich looks perfect and I am so curious about blueberry jam as a flavor enhancement...
Monte Cristos have raspberry jam. Blueberry would work just as well as cranberry with the turkey and cheddar combo.
Blueberry in a sandwich sounds both weird and awesome all at once. It looks so good! Butter grilled is the best way, man.
Hi Mary
I thought so too at first but if you think of all of those turkey sandwiches with cranberry, this is just substitution. Plus, think of the Monte Cristo sandwiches with ham and raspberry jam on the side. Savory and sweet. But OMG, you MUST try that blueberry/turkey/cheddar combo. If not here, then at the SD Soup Shoppe in North Park. They have their own version as well.
And yes, butter is good.
