Our lunch @ Dinosaur Caves Park

As we drove up Price Street (one of the main streets) to get to the 101 North, we passed by the only Filipino store on the Central Coast, De Bu of Pismo Beach.

We'd been there three years ago but didn't stop during this trip...

As you can see, it was pretty foggy!

Bert read up on one of the newer parks in the area and though it would be a nice spot to have our lunch...

which was bought the previous night at Spencer's Fresh Market in Morro Bay. As we made our turnoff from the freeway, we saw this sign for Shell Beach, an unincorporated city within Pismo Beach.

We were now here, at Dinosaur Caves Park, a relatively new park which has beautiful grounds to walk around and play (includes a great playground for children) and super nice and clean bathrooms (always a plus when traveling).

The park gets its name from a huge concrete dinosaur that was once constructed there at a nearby Brown's Rock in the 1940's. The guy who owned the land wanted the dinosaur to be an 'attraction' where you could enter the cave through the dinosaur. It was never completed and was later destroyed in a fire in the 1960's. The main cave collapsed in the 1970's.

This was the view from our picnic table. Despite the fog, there were quite a lot of people out and about that day. People were walking and playing with their dogs and there were a lot of small children enjoying the playground, especially the partially hollowed out fake dinosaur eggs. We even saw an aggressive seagull "attack" a car by pecking it with its beak many times. Yikes!

Our picnic lunch...

Assorted salami, cheese, fruit, vegetables and multigrain crackers.

The cherries were so sweet! I remember this lunch fondly because we had such a nice time here.

Click to enlarge. Lots of background story on the park here.

Placards depicting local sea life...

In the distance was Pismo Beach...

and guano covered rocks.

TC and Bert had fun stuffing themselves in these eggs!

Who else went to Dinosaur Caves Park?
Josh of the travel blog California Through My Lens went here  and has a ton of great photos during a sunny day. Check out his post here.

I also found this VERY RAD video of Dinosaur Caves Park and the nearby Margo Dodd Park (that post to follow). It was really neat seeing the park from an airborne perspective, shot from a QuadCopter (remote control):

Such a cool video!

As we walked north of the Park, there was yet another park with fantastic views...
