Moscow Deli

In this strip mall with random businesses was our lunch destination...

No, not Mama Hong's, but the deli of Russian persuasion...

We wanted to try something Russian and this place fit the bill. Plus, the eatery was situated in a deli slash market. I love those kinds of places where it's not so fancy that you have to worry about being out of place. This was a pretty down to earth eatery chock full of Russian foodstuffs (canned and fresh), breads, meat, desserts, ice creams, and sodas,  and even souvenirs and magazines, all from Russia and various Eastern bloc countries (oooh, I hope that wasn't un-PC to say)...

Meat pies and huge dumplings plus blintzes...

Wall of candy, cookies and canned foods plus souvenirs! I liked the nesting dolls!

Their menu...Now this was over a year ago and I know we got the Odessa sandwich for sure. I don't remember what our other sandwich was but I'm guessing it was the Muskovskiy.

Our currant and pear sodas.   These were totally sugary but tasted oh so good since it was a hot day!

Very delicious these were...

The lady who prepared the sandwiches was quite matter of fact (not too friendly) and of few words. That being said, we really enjoyed the sandwiches she prepared for us. As we were waiting for our lunch, customers would come and go in waves but it never got too busy and we noticed we were the only ones eating in. Everyone else took their food to go.  The sandwiches were pretty meaty and filled with fresh lettuce, onions, tomatoes and a tasty sauce (probably Russian dressing).

Dessert was this poppy filled pastry (don't remember the name of it) and a currant and vanilla sherbet ice cream cone thing for TC. Bert and I were holding out for later...

We bought these blinchikis - one was filled with meat, the other with farmer cheese (according to their online menu). These were eaten later. We had to buy some sour cream to go with it.

Yes, fried dough is always good.  Especially when it is filled with meat and cheese.

This pastry on the other hand wasn't as good. It was on the dry side. I guess you'd have to like poppy seeds too. These were kind of gritty tasting and reminded me of eating bugs, not that I've knowingly eaten bugs before, but the crunchiness (like it was an exoskeleton) kind of icked me out.

It's been more than a year but I'd gladly go here again for their other sandwiches, if we ever do another mini road trip.
