Lestat's Coffee House, Normal Heights

I'd almost forgotten about this post when we were in Normal Heights a few months ago...

I think the original place we wanted to go to was either too busy or we weren't feeling it, so we decided to make our way to Adams Avenue...

where we saw these painted utility boxes right next to our destination...

on the corner of 33rd and Adams...

I'm not sure if this place is named after the vampire Lestat, the protagonist in the second self titled book of Anne Rice's The Vampire Chronicles.  Hmmm, maybe or maybe not.  In any case, Lestat was played by a young Tom Cruise. I remember when the casting news came out in the late '89 that Tom Cruise would be case as Lestat de Lioncourt and Brad Pitt as Louis de Pointe du Lac. Holy what!  I couldn't picture Tom Cruise as an evil vampire but he did what he could but I still wasn't too convinced by his portrayal. In college, N and I were obsessed with The Vampire Chronicles ("Interview with the Vampire", "The Vampire Lestat"  and "The Queen of the Damned"; I know there's a 4th book, "The Tale of the Body Thief" but it came out in 1992 and I didn't like it all that much) buying all the books, graphic novels, and such.   Despite the dubious origin of their name (I still think the owner was an Anne Rice fan), we wanted to get a few cool drinks and a little something to eat before dropping off TC at her dance practice. They serve sandwiches, salads, quiche, assorted pastries as well as tea and coffee drinks.

My iced coffee (unsweetened at this point) and TC's flavored iced tea. It was probably mango green tea or something, plus TC's turkey sandwich This place is pretty big but totally packed with tables, chairs, and sofas. Antisocial me didn't like being in a big room with a lot of people, so we didn't stay too long; it was just a quick pic so we could leave...

My coffee was alright. It was pretty bitter on it's own so of course I had to doctor it up with cream and sugar then all was right with the world once again. Nothing special about the coffee other than it provided the caffeine kick I wanted.

The sandwich looked pretty tasty. The coffeehouse was rather busy but the employees were super nice even though they were being run ragged with drink and food orders left and right.

I remember being so excited that Interview with the Vampire would be a movie back in '89, but being  utterly disappointed that Tom Cruise would be playing Lestat.  Here is the infamous rat biting scene...

This was another video I found where the special effects in the above scene are dissected. Pretty interesting actually.

Mmmm, delicious rat.

Would I go here again? Maybe, just to get a quick drink but not to lounge around. I don't like crowded places and this place is very popular.
