and knew that I could not pass it up...
There used to be a Beard Papa's in National City's Plaza Bonita mall about five years ago. This was when the mall had expanded to twice the size it used to be, complete with a new movie theater and modern food court. I saw the storefront in 2008 and not even a year later, it was gone. I think the demographics weren't quite right for Beard Papa. If it were in Mission Valley or Fashion Valley, it probably would have survived.

It was pretty warm that day so it was nice, once again, to be in a spot with A/C.

I had to cajole Bert and TC to come here. They were probably thinking, "What? Another dessert place?" and rightly so, but hey, I really wanted to try one of their famed cream puffs.
I saw that they had mini's but the lady working there said they only sold them in batches of six, so we initially bought one regular cream puff in the "original" flavor.

There was something called Paris Brest I was wondering about but we just wanted to stick to the cream puff itself.

The choux puffs are out in trays waiting to be filled per order.

Helping us was an older Asian lady with buzzed hair and an edgy (for her age) dyed quiff.

Bert enjoyed watching her "inject" the cream puff shell with the fresh cream.
This is where she dusted the cream puffs with powdered sugar.

Puffs was plural because after seeing my original cream puff, Bert wanted the coffee flavored cream puff (which cost more than the original).

Biting into these and tasting the light and airy choux pastry was amazing. It made the cream puffs from the SD Fair taste like cardboard.

The cream inside was over the top too. OMG, it was so good but I felt incredibly guilty eating it, haha.

Bert really enjoyed his coffee cream puff, especially the filling.

Not a very picturesque view. I was in awe of the numerous ethnic markets around here, mainly Chinese with a few Mexican markets thrown in for good measure. Something to explore for future visits...
Who else went to Beard Papa?
Kirbie went to several locations including Cupertino and Rancho Cucamonga in 2009, and Seattle's Chinatown the following year. Recently, Jinxi went to the one in L.A.'s Little Tokyo.

Just a few doors down was the OTHER place we were supposed to go to first before getting sidetracked by the sweet and creamy wonders of Beard Papa. I was beginning to think we would never find the next place!

Oh, I always wanted to go here but never got the chance when they were still in Plaza Bonita. The cream puff looks so good! I'll have to put this on our list for the next time we go up north.
