18 Years

Celebrating our 18th year of marriage...

(image from Laura Mesguer)

What happened in 1995?

  • A gallon of gas cost a little over a buck (now it's about $4 a gallon, yikes!)
  • A postage stamp cost .32 cents
  • The average yearly income was $35,900 (I remember my paycheck  back thenwas a little less than that)
  • The Ebola virus epidemic spreads in Africa
  • Dolly the cloned sheep was born and lived for seven years
  • Sarin nerve gas was released in Japanese subways, killing 12 and sickeningg over 5,000 people
  • The Unabomber's Manifesto was published
  • A truck bomb crashes into the Oklahoma City Federal Building, 168 people are killed
  • OJ Simpson was found innocent (that was a crime in itself)
  • TIME's Man of the Year was Newt Gingrich (WTF)
  • Windows 95 was released by Microsoft
  • Javascript was first introduced by Netscape
  • DVD optional disc storage media format was announced
  • Superbowl XIX Champs were the SF 49'ers
  • NBC Champs were the Houston Rockets
  • World Series winners were the Atlanta Braves
  • The Starbucks Frappucino was released
  • The George Foreman Lean Mean Grilling Machine was released
  • Tejano singer Selena killed by president of her fan club
  • The Pixar movie "Toy Story" was released. Other popular films included, "Ace Ventura Pet Detective", "Apollo 13", "Batman Forever", "Die Hard with a Vengeance", and "Braveheart" (which won the Oscar for Best Film)
  • Popular musical artists included: Weezer, Alanis Morissette (hated her), Mariah Carey, the Smashing Pumpkins, Rage against the Machine, and Garth Brooks  (the mid 90's were a TERRIBLE TIME for music)
  • Popular TV shows were: "Friends" , "Seinfeld" (loved this show!), "ER", "Caroline in the City", "Frasier", and "Home Improvement"
Bizzare Pop Culture moments:
  • Drew Barrymore flashes her boobs to David Letterman on his show (that was hilarious!)
  • Cindy Crawford and Richard Gere took out a full page ad in the London Times to proclaim their heterosexuality (remember, they were actually married for one year?)
  • Hugh Grant arrested for soliciting a prostitute and apologizes on Jay Leno show

And because I listed songs with the corresponding number in the title last year, I shall do the same this year, but only these songs since I don't really like, "I'm 18" by Alice Cooper, "18" by Moby, or "Eighteen Yellow Roses" by Bobby Darin. Sigh.

"Hangar 18" by Megadeth

I used to have hair as long as Dave Mustaine. It was headbangin' hair and I kind of miss it, but not really. It was such a pain to dry and brush through, plus it got heavy after awhile. Aaaah, the mid 90's. I don't miss the other crappy music, hairstyles, and fashions at all.

"18 'Til I Die" - Bryan Adams

What's up with his hair style? He looks better with short hair. And guyliner too? Pass. Only Adam Lambert can rock the guyliner with style! But, I still like Bryan Adams after all these years. His voice had that raspy quality and he had some good songs back in the 80's ("Cuts Like a Knife", "Summer of '69", and "Run to You").

"18 & Life" - Skid Row

OMG, Sebastian Bach had the prettiest hair of any rock star back then. Even better than Dave Mustaine, because it looks like he actually combed his mane!  He has that classic metal singer voice, able to reach stratospheric heights like his idol Rob Halford of Judas Priest.

Here is last year's anniversary post (which links the previous anniversary posts)

2012 - 17 Years

I'm not one for being too mushy, so I'll keep it short and sweet, Happy Anniversary to my husband Bert! Married for 18 years, but together for 10 years prior to that (yes, we were young!)! That's more than half of our lives!

In the words of Robbie from "The Wedding Singer", "It would be so nice growing old with you..."

and once more for C and S in Canada (and any other Canadian readers), Happy Canada Day!

Happy 18th anniversary! Holy cow - 18 years?! Wishing you and Bert a happy celebration.

I LOVED your 1995 list! The things that stuck out most to me: OJ, George Foreman, and "18 & Life" - Skid Row!!

Sorry but I liked Alanis - but I was going thru a break up at the time so you know why I liked her songs :)

P.S. 18 and Life was one of my faves. Totally in love with Sebastian Bach. Ahhh! I miss those music videos. Do they even make music videos anymore? I'm so out of the loop. LOL!

Congrats & happy anniversary to you and Bert, with many more years to come!

I remember all of the '95 things happening and it's hard to believe it all happened eighteen freaking years ago! I saw Bryan Adams in concert a few years later and he was really awesome in concert. I think of that "18 Til I Die" album as his "oh crap, I'm not old, I'm not old, I'm not old" album :D
