Our last stop was the Women's Museum of California in Liberty Station for yet another comic related art exhibit...
Located in Barracks 16, this was the first time for us to visit the museum.

The exhibit was called "Wonder Women: On Paper and Off" featuring contemporary comic art and Trina Robbins' historical collection. The show opened on June 7th and will end September 1st.

The ladies at the museum said they timed the exhibit to precede as well as run in tandem with the San Diego Comic Con, which ended it's five day run last weekend.

Across from the museum was a grass area that was set up with obstacle courses. It turns out there was some sort of dog event for "agility". We watched amusedly for a few minutes before heading in the museum.

We really enjoyed the exhibit which was both educational and empowering in terms of how far women have come in comics. It was also interesting to see how male artists depicted women versus women artists (ex: bigger boobs, as drawn by the men).

There was also an informational section at the back of the museum that honored different women of color. I was pleased to see the inclusion of Filipino Americans in the biography of Dolores Huerta, co-founder of the UFWA. Normally, Filipinos have been excluded from the mythology and the creation of the UFW, when it was in fact the Filipinos who initiated the 1965 Delano Grape Strike.

There was another section that encouraged museum goers to draw their own superhero(ine).

TC chose Storm from the X-Men.

She ended up making one eye closed because she couldn't match the other eye. I still thought it looked all right. Bert likes that Halle Berry played Storm in the movies. Rawr, ha ha.

It was a super long day. We started out with breakfast at Belen Artisan Bakers, then had some mini French desserts at A Delight of France, followed by the Comic Art exhibit at the California Center for the Arts, and topped off by gelato at EscoGelato!
I was wiped out by the end of the afternoon and it was only 3 pm!

The women at the museum were so nice and happy that we were there to visit. It's not that big inside, but the exhibit was laid out nicely with different themes for each panel. Museum admission was $5 for adults, $3 for students (TC). We'll have to check this place out again once they change out their exhibit. This is another good reason to visit Liberty Station to take advantage of the cultural arts offerings in our great city.
