Oregon Day 10 - Downtown, Powell's Books

Come hell or high water, I will finish last year's Spring Portland trip posts!

Well, maybe not in one shot, but I'll probably end up stretching it out like an awesomely bombastic Neil Peart drum solo...

Loved seeing these random horse rings all over Portland...This was down the street from our "place" (not a hotel) in the Goose Hollow neighborhood. We wanted to make a trek to one of the biggest  independent bookstores in the Pacific Northwest...

Heading South to Powell's Books. You can see the Fred Meyer store sign  (kind of like a CVS/Rite-Aide) on the left.  The day was actually warm! High 50's!

So ironic. Our first AND last day, the sun decides to come out. Everything else was "like Sunday"...

The logo of the city's soccer team which has rabid followers and a fkg rad REAL LUMBERJACK for a mascot, Timber Joey (detailed in my previous highlights post)...

Jenn Weld Field is home of the Timbers and the Vikings...

The Zoobomb sculpture...

The block of building was situated on a very narrow block. I noticed the Pacific Seafoods truck and got a littl excited. We ate at the Pacific Oyster Company (which is owned by Pacific Seafood) during our day trip to Astoria and the coast.

Love the graphics...

We hadn't been to Powell's since our last trip in Spring 2009. That bookstore is so huge it takes up a city block and you literally need a map to navigate your way through the color coded rooms. It's every book lovers dream. Both new and old books can be found, mixed, on the shelves.

Bert liked the uninentionally pervy title of this book

TC's cool 6th grade teacher last year let her borrow "Leviathan" (a Steampunk classic) last year. I tried reading the first few pages and then forgot where I put it. This reminds me that  I should probably buy him another copy!

Downstairs near the cashier lines where you can get tons of impulse purchases like stickers, water bottles, magnets, etc.

Portland is a very bike conscious city. Our friend, KDB didn't even own a car (until recently).

View of the southeastern corner of Powell's...

The west end of the building....told you it was huuuuuge.

Believe it or not, we left empty-handed from Powell's. TC wanted to save her money and Bert and I had more fun looking around and didn't feel the need to get anything. We headed back to our place so we could check off another place I wanted to see on my 'to-do' list. Below, the Portland Firefighter's Memorial, a small public park dedicated to a former firefighter who was killed in action.

Here's another view (photo courtesy of wikipedia):

Our flight wasn't leaving 'til later that evening so we still had the whole day ahead of us!

Up next...a visit to a house featured in one of 2008's blockbuster films...
