Trolley Adventure: Part 1 - Riding the Blue Line

A few days ago, Bert, TC and I decided to have a little fun with public transportation...

and explore our fine city via trolley....

It costs $5 (really, $7 if you include the one time $2 fee to get the plastic credit card thing) for a day pass. You can got anywhere you want and ride the buses too with the pass. We started off at "H" Street and took the blue line up to Fifth Avenue in downtown. Our plan was to ride all of the lines and kind of play it by ear.

Passing through Barrio Logan and approaching the Coronado Bridge....

Heading near the 12th and Imperial station where you can branch off to Southeast San Diego all the way up to La Mesa. Below, the new library dome. I think it's a cool addition to our skyline.

This building caught my eye - it was the YWCA...

The baroque ornamention on their entrance reminded me of the architectural details seen in many of Balboa Park's museums such as the Museum of Man and the Museum of Art. This style of sculptural decor is known as "churrigurresque". The San Diego YWCA was founded in 1908; the building predates the park's museum buildings that were built for the 1915 Panama-California Exposition.

The stately U.S. Grant Hotel, which is in front of Horton Plaza.

After perusing my coupons for various lunch venues, Bert chose our destination so we headed a few blocks over.

to this street which was kind of on the outskirts of the main action in the Gaslamp...

It was a few doors down from the, uh skeezy establishment known as Hustler...

A few things about riding the trolley:

You have to build in a lot of time just for all the stops.  You have to be able to relinquish your control of time. You can't just hop in like you do in your car and expect to get there fast. You also have the benefit (or torture) of hearing some really interesting (and bizarre) conversations around you. As a control freak, I didn't like having to wait (especially when we had to change trolleys at the stations), but I can see how it can be quite convenient for those who don't have a car.  It was fun to see San Diego from a different point of view. Often, when we are on the freeway, we sometimes catch glimpses of the trolley trundling past.

Up next, lunch a few doors from Larry Flynt's XXX emporium...
