As you can see, I have thousands of songs, many of which I don't normally listen to on a regular basis. Perhaps some of you with iPods have certain playlists that you listen to whenever certain moods strike you, or if you're lazy like me, will occasionally put your iPod to "shuffle''...
I really like the "shuffle" option because I get to hear songs at random. There are some hidden gems sometimes and other times, I wonder even why I have the song on there at all!
Here's a random sampling of ten songs:
Hard Act to Follow - Split Enz (1981 from the album, "Waiata")
I first remember hearing this song in 6th grade. In fact, it came out the month of my 12th birthday. I saved up my birthday money to buy the cassette tape at the Navy Exchange! We're talking $7.98 bones!
I was already into the now classic rock bands, Queen, Boston, Rush, and Van Halen. During tha point in time, I was starting to get into the Police, the B-52's, and the Pretenders. I was fascinated with all things new wave back then. MTV was still new and Split Enz's videos were among the first music videos I ever saw. Split Enz was an early 80's New Zealand based group, led by brothers Tim and Neil Finn, group which later split up and became Crowded House. The word "Waiata" is the Maori word for "singing". Other songs from the same album included, "History Never Repeats" and "One Step Ahead".
[update -Dammit, THIS is the video I should have posted!]
Gotta love those Solid Gold Dancers!
Rip Her to Shreds - Blondie (1976 from their self-titled debut album)
One of my favorite Blondie songs, which was recently featured in the movie, "Bridesmaids" during the opening and ending credits. For the record, I really HATE that movie. Ugh!
Cut My Hair - The Who ( 1973 from "Quadrophenia, Part 1")
From the classic album (with gatefold sleeve) about English teenage angst and differences across class, (Mods & Rockers). This is the fourth song on the first side of the double album. It comes after "Quadrophenia" and before "The Punk and Godfather".
She's Gone - Hall and Oates (1973)
Gotta have some blue eyed soul here.
Oates' moustache is so awesome!
I Started Something I Couldn't Finish - The Smiths (1987, from "Strangeways, Here We Come")
Who didn't like the Smiths back then! I still love 'em now!
Christine - Siouxsie & the Banshees (1980, from the "Kaleidascope")
What I really liked about this song was the guitar riff...
Bad Reputation - Joan Jett (1981 from "Bad Reputation"
Joan Jett is my idol! Well, her and Chrissie Hynde!
She's so badazz and still going strong...
Kazooed on Klassics - The Temple City Kazoo Orchestra
Why the hell do I have this you may wonder? Well, if you know your "Sixteen Candles", then you know this song! It plays during the scene where Samantha Baker boards the bus for school. The snippet played in the movie is "Hungarian Rhapsody". The song is a parody of Stars on 45's medleys of Beatles songs set to an unfortunate disco beat. In this case, classical songs are interspersed with "In-a-Gadda-da-Vida", "The William Tell Overture" (the theme for "The Lone Ranger"), and Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries". The snippet in the movie is, "Hungarian Dance no. 5" by Brahms.
"I loathe the bus...."
Blitzkrieg Bop - The Ramones (1976 from their self-titled debut album)
Even my 12 year old daughter can spot a Ramones song from the first few seconds. She recently schooled a classmate on that classmate's Ramones' shirt. Turns out the girl didn't even know they were a punk band from the 70's. The girl only bought it because one of the members of One Direction had it. Holy fkg shit. What a travesty.
"Hey ho! Let's go!"
Heh heh...I have trained her well. Like it or not.
Happy Hour - The Housemartins (1986, "London O Hull 4")
aka, the Smiths lite, haha.
Loved the Claymation video. This was some high tech shit back then.
My radio stations are still messed up for my car radio. Having my iPod set to shuffle makes car rides more fun and exciting when random songs pop up. Although I do have an extremely itchy finger that likes to forward songs after hearing the first few seconds, which irritates TC to no end. But do I stop that habit? No I do not.
"Can't we hear a song the whole way through?" she laments.
Press. Press. Press.
"Maybe"....is my mumbled response.
And so it goes...

I use to listen to the Smiths in the car with people but they would become frightened I was going to wreck and him them all. Now I listen when I'm driving alone...
And if a double-decker bus
Crashes into us
To die by your side
Is such a heavenly way to die
And if a ten ton truck
Kills the both of us
To die by your side
Well the pleasure, the privilege is mine
Hi Soo, I gotta ask...were you a teen in the 80's?
Have you heard the Spanish version of that song (the one you quoted)..."There is a Light(That Never Goes Out)...
It's by Mikel Erentxun, a Spanish rock singer. His version is called, "Esta Luz Nunca Se Apagara"....it's quite cool! Came out in 92.
Yup. Graduated Mira Mesa High in 1984. I found the song on youtube. Weird. I think I'd appreciate it more if I spoke Spanish. Do you like The The?
Great song choices! I think our iPods may be very very similar...except mine would be heavier on the Depeche Mode. LOVE that Housemartins song!

Thanks! I'm surprised the shuffle didn't have any of my soundtrack or 80's rock in there! i have so much random shit on there including dialogue snippets from my fave 80's movies.
I like some new music. Coldplay and Adele are good. You should listen to The The. The guitar and song writing is on par with The Smiths. This is one of my fav songs:

Say does caninecologne stand for something?
If you've ever watched the John Hughes' teen flick classic, "Sixteen Candles", then you will surely know the CanineCologne reference.
The quote from the movie is also at the top of my blog page.
I'll have to watch the movie again. It's been awhile. I get where the reference came from now. How did you become baninecologne?
it's just a name dude. plus i thought it was fucking funny and only 80's john hughes diehards would get the reference.
