Mambo gelato!

After our lunch at Ikuru and our botched attempt to get dessert at Chi Chocolate which was closed, we ended up going to Gelato Vero Caffe...

It may not be as chic as some of the newer gelato spots, but it's one of our tried and true favorites...

Parking is metered and usually sucky. We normally try to park a few blocks for free up the hill.

In the past, we never got more than two flavors since we usually got smalls. Since I had my trusty coupon, we got mediums and chose three flavors (yay!).

The flavor selection has a few standards (chocolate, hazelnut, pistachio and fruit flavors) and some others that are rotated.

You can see their complete list of flavors here.

The gelato here tends to melt quickly...we ended up sampling each other's flavors.

TC's cup - Caramel, Lemon, and Strawberry. I was surprised she got the caramel with the fruit flavors but she really seemed to like it.

Our cup - Spumoni, chocolate chip, and pistachio. My favorite was the Spumoni because of the cherry bits and chocolate almond bits.

We made a quick stop upstairs to Shakespeare's for some candy and soda from England. The soda was on clearance for .99. The candy bars we haven't sampled yet, but Lion has dark chocolate, Crunchie has cereal bits, chocoalte and caramel, and Picnic is like Baby Ruth but with raisins. Those were about $1.80-$2.25 each.

Passing by Saffron Chicken, I couldn't help but notice the color combinations...

I can't believe how tall she's getting. Just a year and a half ago, she was only up to our shoulder!

I actually found a song with "gelato" in the title.

The cover is by Ettore D while the original is by swing/big band/jazz musician Ray Gelato (his real last name is Irwin) and was featured on the soundtrack to the movie, "No Reservations" (which I've never seen but heard it sucked! Ugh!).

Of all the gelato places in San Diego, this was the first we'd been to (since our colege days). Nice to know that it's still here and not changing to be trendy or anything.

Up next - our adventure with public transportation...

Love this part of town. We used to go to the 'original'/'little' Saffron store (grab and go) and then climb up the stairs to share a chicken at one of the plastic tables, then to Vero and (almost always) a pistachio and spumoni-the eat it upstairs there also. So darn good.

I like how everything is so close together here...
