Seafood Friday: Week 1 - Ikiru

Thank goodness for the four day weekend! We were both fortunate to have Friday off so we went to check out the recreation of the San Salvador galleon in Spanish Landing that morning (post will be forthcoming).

Since we were in the area, we thought we'd give Point Loma Seafoods a try, being the first Friday of Lent and all..

That was a horrendously futile effort because the car lines were hellaciously long trying to get into their  jam packed parking lot so we decided to forgo Point Loma Seafoods altogether and head to nearby Liberty Station instead. Our original plan was to try Tender Greens, but their seafood options were very limited, so TC suggested the sushi place down the hall.

Since we'd never been there before, we figured why not, but I was still a bit wary trying this place without prior knowledge.

Ikiru is kind of hidden within Liberty Station, just a few doors down from Tender Greens and near Five Guys.

You can view their menu online here

I thought they were a bit pricy but then, I'm not one that eats a lot of sushi to make such comparisons. I was actaully attracted to their scallop special, which the server said was four scallops and was considered an "appetizer". The description also sounded good to me...

Our three dishes:

TC's Caterpillar Roll, which had radish sprout antenna and hot sauce eyes.

Bert's Lunch Special - Salmon with 4-pc California roll, vegetable and shrimp tempura, cucumber salad, and a scoop of rice. The salmon was grilled and brushed with a teriyaki glaze. Not bad for a lunch special.

My Scallops Special which looked quite beautiful...four tender scallops in a white wine and sake broth with a shiso leaf underneath, and slivered scallions on top. The swoosh of sauce was made from bell pepper but had a citrus taste as well.  I have to mention that I ordered a side salad with this, but the girl forgot the order so it came late after she was reminded about it.

The presentation was quite lovely and the scallops tasted as good as they looked. Very tender and flavorful! I had to ask for a spoon so I could better enjoy the citrusy broth. We liked the tiny lotus chip garnishes too.

Besides Ikiru, there are two other Japanese food options, Sushiya and Mura Sushi. We've tried neither and having tried this place, thought it was okay but a bit too pricy to enjoy on a regular basis. I was pleasantly surprised by the scallop special and would like to try making it at home one of these days.

Dinner later that evening was a near repeat of our Valentine's dinner, but instead of Butternut Squash ravioli, we had the Fresh & Easy Lobster ravioli (2 packages for $6). And talk about forgetful, we enjoyed our Lobster ravioli with BACON, as we did the night before.  After having a few delicious bites, Bert realized the mistake, pointed it out to us, but still, kept on eating it!!!! Well, as Bill Compton from True Blood season 1 would have said, "As you can see, I did not burst into flames" nor were we stricken down with lightning for our transgressions!!!
