via Barrio Logan. We had just visited the SD Public Market and I was kind of irritated that one of the farmers who promised he'd bring rhubarb for me forgot to bring it. I'd never worked with rhubarb before and wanted to make a chutney. Oh well, next time if it's even in season...
We wanted to use a coupon I'd been holding on to...
Bert and TC hadn't been here before. I thought it would be fun (or stupid) to attempt lunch in Hillcrest on a Sunday...

But before we do so, take a gander at these mirrored platforms seen on a girl who was waiting in line for Snooze! Totally bitchen! I just wish the nude leather straps were black or purple or even red! Tan or nude is kind of boring!

For those of you that remember, d bar is located where the old Corvette's used to be. It's pretty new and features a celebrity chef, Keegan Gerhardt (who was seen busing tables and serving waters to customers because they were severely understaffed, but I'm getting ahead of myself)...
Anyhoo, the lines were monstrously long at Snooze. A peek into its neighbar, d bar showed plenty of empty tables. We were told the wait would be 15 minutes which seemed okay. It turned out to be half an hour to get seated and even then, once we were seated, it took almost another half hour to get our food!

See? Empty tables galore!

Their ready made sweeets- cookies, macarons, hand made chocolates and mini cakes/tarts.

Apparently, this was the second weekend that they started offering brunch here. This is their regular lunch menu:

And here is their "new" brunch menu. According to our server, they underestimated how popular their brunch would be. They only had one cook working that day (I overhead another server telling a customer that) and service was painfully slow. What should have been a one hour experience stretched out to two hours! Faaaaaaack!

The mimosa that Bert and I shared...

Our entrees, served ten years later...

Bert's Tahini Salmon served with greends, edamame beans, baby bok choy, almonds, and a citrus soy dressing. This is the same entree that MFH and La Ley ordered last summer when we had dinner for Mr. TJ's birthday. Bert enjoyed the dish; he was trying to eat a little healthier now that it's Lent.

TC got the Mac and Cheese - which included four cheese, applewood smoked bacon (it's hiding in there), and topped with Panko crumbs and crushed Cheese Nips.

We liked the crunchy and cheesy topping. They should try putting crushed Doritos on that! Yeah, I said it. Doritos man. Or those Flaming Hot Cheetos.

This was my

Here's another look at it...Rib eye with a demi glace over a savory waffle topped with scrambled eggs. Very very decadent for me.

I loved that the waffle had chives in it. The meat was so fork tender. Everyone got to taste a bit of it, especially TC since she didn't really have too much meat in her dish.

I liked what this lady had (she was at a neighboring table while I surreptitiously snapped this pic)...I'm not sure if this was the chicken fried steak or what, but whatever it was, it looked pretty tempting.

The dessert menu:

We saw another family behind us having this dessert so we got the same thing. I was attracted by the macaron. This was the Tiramisu Cocktail....

The layers were light and airy; the top dusted with cocoa powder and garnished with this delicate chocolate squiggle and topped with a scoop of espresso granita (very strong!) and an espresso macaron.

The dessert had everything that I liked - the coffee flavor, chocolate, and the slightly crunch and chewiness from the macaron...

as well as the joltingly strong and bitter espresso granita. It was a tiny scoop but I would have been happy to have just this!

Other than spending nearly two hours just to have brunch, our food was actually pretty good. Our server was super nice, but it sucked having to wait so long. I felt bad for the people waiting outside who thought they would easily get seated here after seeing all the empty tables. Suckers!!!!!
D bar needs to beef up the number of servers and cooks on a Sunday if they expect to continue Brunch and offer some stiff competition to Snooze next door. Who do they think they are? The Fisherman's Porch?!
Last year, one of my GBF's and I tried to go to Snooze (which doesn't take reservations). The wait was more than one hour! We felt like Fred and Carrie in the "Brunch Village" episode of Portlandia! We didn't think it was worth waiting more than an hour no matter how mind blowing and orgasmically awesome everyone says it is. We ended up having our breakfast at the Fig Tree Cafe around the corner where there was no wait and the food was just as good but not as twee and frou frou and not pedigreed and shit. I was expecting Ed Begley, Jr. to serve us that day.
Previous visits to d bar:
July 2012 for Mr. TJ's birthday
November 2012 Dessert with Astroboi
*The Fisherman's Porch is a fictitious popular brunch restaurant referenced in the "Brunch Village" episode of the last year's season finale of "Portlandia".
View snippets of the episode here and here, Tim Robbins is nearly unrecognizable! I thought he looked like Ozzy Osbourne, but with longer hair.
I always want to type d bag whenever I see the words "d bar"! Let me get it out of my system:
d bag d bag d bag d bag d bag d bag d bag d bag d bag d bag d bag d bag d bag d bag d bag
d bag d bag d bag d bag d bag d bag d bag d bag d bag d bag d bag d bag d bag d bag d bag!!!!!
I feel so much better now.

That's too bad on the understaffing and long brunch time. I would be seriously annoyed, but that Tiramisu looks so good! I have only been here for the desserts but I've heard good things about the food so I need to come in and try it. It really is crazy how long the wait is at Snooze. I love the food there, but I am not willing to wait an hour either so I hardly go there.
Man, that sucks that you had to wait so long for food. I might have stabbed someone with a fork. It all looks good though, I still haven't tried D Bar yet but someday.... maybe not on a Sunday...
hi kirbie - you would have liked that tiramisu dessert. i liked all the "extras" with it, the granita and macaron.
hi mary - haha, "stabby" aren't we. if you do go to d bag, then make sure to go fkg early so you won't have to wait.
