Sweet Sisters Bakery and D'Volada

Because I'm expedient, okay, lazy, I am combining two posts in one...

detailing our recent excursions on two separate occasions into this cute bakery in downtown Chula Vista...

The first visit was when I went out with TC, KD and her daughter (during our marathon downtown CV day). After our lunch at Teriyaki Grill, like Frogger, we miraculously made our way across the street without getting hit since the city is doing roadwork. I wanted KD to see their pretty desserts...

She was pointing to the boxed Alfajores cookies...(I think CAB's version is much better!)

I bought a selection of cookies plus a mini chocolate tart to share. I got three of everything except for the tart (I bought two). There were two fruit filled cookies (apricot and raspberry), one butter pecan cookie, which tasted just like a Mexican wedding cookie but without the powdered sugar, and one layered shortbread cookie with chocolate stripes. I liked the shortbread cookies the best while the girls liked the fruity ones. KD liked it all.

I like that this place offers bite size versions of desserts. It's fun to try a lot of different things instead of committing to just one big piece.

Now for my other visit less than a week later, I was with the 2 C's (Cathy and Carol) and we went here after our fabulous lunch at Miramar Fish Market. We admired these desserts in the case. I ended up getting the one on the far left for Bert - it was a banana cream puff tart, which he enjoyed.

More of their selections - a chocolate covered cheesecake and fruit topped cake slices.

Plus more cookies. Love these chocolate and nut dipped buttery cookies.

I bought a selection of their cookies to share and we then made our way across the street to what is known as the "Mexican Starbucks", D'Volada. This coffee shop is house next to the old and now defunct  UA-Pacific Glasshouse 6 Theaters.

Were we there for the coffee? Kinda, but really, look on the left of the "D" on the sign...

Yes, they have their version of the Chamango!  Below, their other non-cofee beverages.

It was so damn hot that day so we chose to stay inside and enjoy their a/c while we nibbled on the cookies from Sweet Sisters...

The view from our window. The dude outside was making  tuna sandwiches with a loaf of bread.  Note to self, if you want to save money on parking in downtown Chula Vista, just park in the structure behind Fuddruckers. You get three hours for free but I don't think anyone really checks how long you're parked there. Not that it's terribly expensive to park in metered slots in CV (it's not really), but if you want to save some change and be in the shade, the structure is the better option.

Do these desserts look familiar? Ha ha, the only different this time are those chocolate and nut dipped butter cookies. One was dipped in pecans, the other with almonds. Both were excellent.

In addition to our coffee drinks (I had an iced coffee while the two C's got it hot), we all got Chamangos (pictured are two small and one large for comparison).

There ya go again...

And a much better and more colorful view outside on their patio where the gate doesn't work, forcing us to go back through the restaurant to leave...

The verdict on the Chamango? It was refreshing and tasty but it was not as good as Teresita's which uses more fresh mango chunks. This seemed to have much more chamoy than mango smoothie or mango chunks. It didn't taste as "balanced" as Teresita's. It was still worth a try! I thought we were a comical sight  carefully clutching our coffees and chamangos as we headed back to the car.

If D'Volada's chamango was closer to home, I'd get it all the time, even if it's not quite like Teresita's. So I'm a chamango 'ho, what can I say.

My mouth is watering just thinking of that chamango (from Teresita's!)....

I loved this version of chamango- saltier and chunky. The cookie halves that made it home were wonderful. The Mister and I are going back soon!
