Retro Bubble Up that Bert was compelled to get at Marukai Living, of all places...

These were in the "Hawaiian" section
While shopping for components for TC's Halloween Costume at the local party store, we saw a whole line of Ugly Dolls party supplies! This is the Ice Bat mask.

OMG, these party supplies were so cute! Invitations, stickers, erasers, party horns, hats, plates, napkins, balloons. I wanted it all, but just bought a .99 sheet of temporary tattoos. For TC of course...heh heh.

These "gourmet" marshmallows were in the clearance section at Fresh and Easy...

I liked the chocolate chip ones better than the caramel.

These were way too sweet. I could only handle two. I wonder how transitory these fancy food companies are. I mean, how many people are going to be buying these up at full price?

A few weeks ago when I had dinner at Harar with my friend, it was NOT painted Green! This photo was taken about two weeks ago (less than a week after I had dinner with her). Hello! Can't miss it now, can ya!

My friend whom I had brunch with Figtree in Hillcrest told me this place was closed and would reopen with new ownership at a different location.

I read online that Brian's will take over the old Johnny's R spot on El Cajon Blvd. I didn't even know that Johnny's R. had closed! Then, while printing online coupons from Community Magazine because I'm cheap like that, I saw that this would be renamed as "lil b's". Funny that there was a coupon for a restaurant that hadn't opened yet, or perhaps when it was printed, they had projected that it would be open already. TC and I were in the area the other day and saw workers painting over the exterior - bright colors too! Like super bright, fiesta and Mexican blanket stripes bright!

As seen in a City Beat ad...I actually want to see this exhibit. The last time it was in San Diego was back in 2000. I was still pregnant with TC and Bert and I caught the show. For those of you that are SD resident, you might have remembered the ominous guillotine next to the Museum of Man. Anyhow, that's something I want to check out.

When I took TC and KD's daughter to the park last week, we passed by the newly re-landscaped pool by the Botanical Gardens. A month or so ago, some reckless people organized a Midnight free for all water gun fight here and ended up trashing the pool and the surrounding plants. I believe a few of the koi fish in the pond were also killed. In any case, it was a pretty terrible thing they did. I can't believe the stupidity of some people. I'm glad the vegetation was replaced.

In other news, Bert's Grill by the Vons on Telegraph Canyon Road has closed.

So long Bert's. We will miss your fried fish, squid, crispy pata, and lechon kawali!

In the same strip mall, a new restaurant, Korean Kitchen has popped up where Craw Island once was. I saw the dismal yelp reviews on this place and am a bit hesitant to go here. But then, can you really trust yelp, right?

On another note, the Eastlake Brew House closed on Monday! We were just there for our 25th high school reunion a few months ago! This was also where Thane celebrated his 40th bday. Kind of sad. I read online that some of the workers didn't even know until they arrived at work that they were out of a job while some were notified online. No photo here but here's the blurb from the SD Reader.
Last week, child labor was in full force! TC and KD's daughter made red velvet cupcakes...

The cupcakes were frosted with homemade cream cheese frosting (made by me). The girls did everything else.

Sometime last week...we used a buy one get one free root beer float. This was before going to Crispy Fried Chicken.

Another time last week, I took the girls out for frozen yogurt at the Nuyo on Telegraph. I like how "halo halo" is listed on the poster! Has it really gone that mainstream? I wonder if non-Filipinos even know what it is; they probably pronounce it as "Hay-Low Hay-Low"...

Can you guess which is mine?

TC's mess of a yogurt cup...Those pearly ball things are a thin skinned boba-like thing filled with juice.

My favorite house in one of the older and quieter neighborhoods in Chula Vista. And if you're thinking that I took this photo while driving, you're wrong! KD was driving that day. This beautiful New Orleans style home with black wrought iron rails is on the eastern side of Hilltop Drive, north of H St. but before it turns into F St.

That's it for now....

Hmm, I was suspicious of Brian's "renovation" for some reason ever since they suddenly closed. Johnny's R I haven't been to forever. The people that work there are super cool, hopefully they'll retain some of them. I forgot to mention on my last post, there are tons of coupons in the current Lighthouse SD ramen edition...
Is that a magazine? Is it Japanese and what are the coupons for?
Looks like the old Johnny's R is getting whipped into shape quickly so it can open soon...
You can pick one up outside most Japanese grocers, like Nijiya where we visited with Cathy last. It's a ramen edition with coupons for free sides, toppings, etc at a few listed restaurants. It is in Japanese but the coupons have English on them if I remember right.
Thanks Dennis. I'll look for it next time I go to Nijiya.
