Return to Legoland

It had been about five years since we last went here...

Thanks to comped passes from Darlene, we were able to go during the Fall Break with TC and KDD...

For some reason, I thought the park opened at 9:00 am. Turns out it was 10 am, but they let people in at 9:40'ish. It was also supposed to be in the high 80's that day, but it didn't feel that hot actually. Thank goodness Carlsbad gets a good breeze since it's by the coast.

This Lego sculpture was near an Italian eatery. Look at the fake chest "hair". There was even armpit Lego hair too (you can't see it from this photo) that the girls found hilarious.

I'm skipping pictures of the rides and all that. The girls went on several of the attractions and after a few hours, we took a break for lunch. At the Garden Restaurant (one of the park's healthier places to eat), we got a fruit cup for the girls to share, a Caprese salad for Bert and I to share and two sandwiches (one chicken strawberry balsamic, shown on left)...

and a roast beef with cheddar. My chicken sandwich was toasted, which was a nice surprise. I ended up saving the other half for later (it was eaten on the drive back down). Bert's roast beef was nothing spectacular though.

For the girls, we went to Castle Burger where they both got burgers and shared fries.

The fries looked and tasted pretty good so we ended up getting an order for ourselves. The skin was on and there was some sort of crack seasoning on it. Not bad at all!

Again, we shall fast forward through even more rides and strolling along the park.  Believe it or not, TC was once again hungry. She got a hotdog near the "driving school". She's been on a major growth spurt and seems like the bottomless pit sometimes. Luckily her metabolism is pretty high. Sigh. To be young again and eat whatever you want!

Now for some awesome Lego creativity - This section of the park had recreations of major U.S. cities. When I last went in early 2007, they were putting on the finishing touches for Las Vegas.

Here's a closeup of a pool scene. What? No topless bathers? Where are the Las Vegas showgirls?

Part of NYC...

And in the New Orleans French Quarter...

A N'orleans jazz funeral. I liked how they recreated the cemetery, which has their tombs above the ground.  If you look closely, the coffin is empty. When I took this photo, there was no music playing. I guess it had turned off and was waiting to do another cycle, but it was dixieland jazz music. Happy not sad music.

Still in New Orleans - this recreates all the people lines up to get bead necklaces thrown at them. Now if they want to make this more realistic, they should show some Lego women lifting their shirts to expose their tittays. C'mon, you KNOW that's how they get those beads!!!!!

Washington DC - The Capitol building with little Lego musicians doing formations.

Okay, now this was the BEST $#%@ part of Legoland for me and Bert- the STAR WARS Miniland Exhibit.

When TC was a tiny toddler, one of her first drawings was of the Death Star shooting out a tractor beam and more memorable, an Imperial Walker (aka: AT-AT - All Terrain Armoured Transport)! We have it around somewhere, I should try to find it! That's one of my fondest memories of our little geek child in training.

This scene is from the ice planet Hoth, featured in my favorite Star Wars movie, "The Empire Strikes Back" (the middle one of the ORIGINAL trilogy).

The Cantina at the spaceport city of Mos Eisley, a most "wretched hive of scum and villainy", according to Jedi Master Obi Wan Kenobi. This scene is featured in the very first Star Wars film, "Episode IV - A New Hope" and begins on the desert planet of Tattooine. If you want to know more about the REAL Tattouine, please read Kirk's Tunisia posts (just click on his search bar and type in "Tunisia"), especially this one on Tataouine and Matmata (where you can see the Lars dwelling!)!

Remember, "Greedo shot first"!

Here's the other side of the Mos Eisley Cantina with the Millenium Falcon which, according to Han Solo, can do the Kessel Run in twelve parsecs. This run is the bet that won him the ship from Lando Calrissian. Trivia - The exterior shots of the Cantina were filmed in the Tunisian town of Ajim, a port city on the Isle of Djerba.

Here is a scene from the forest moon of Endor, home of the aforementioned Ewoks. This is a Y-Wing fighter on the deck; on the ground is a "Chicken Walker" (aka AT-ST - All Terrain Scout Walker). This is from the third movie, "Return of the Jedi (Episode VI).

There were more scenes from the "Prequels" featuring Naboo, Geonosis, and Kashyk and Mustafar and one scene from the planet Chistophsis (from the animated series, "The Clone Wars" which we do like). The prequels were just awful. I mean, really really bad. Hayden Christensen as the young (and wooden) anakin? A cringe inducing pre-Black Swan Natalie Portman as Princess Amidala?

And this. These are the  three words which make me want to hurl the most.

Jar Jar Binks.

So yeah, that is why I didn't take any snaps of the "newer" Prequel scenes since they weren't part of our fond childhood memories.

Up this slight incline were various Lego recreations of popular characters like Darth Vader, Princess Lei, Wicket, Luke Skywalker, Yoda, and Han Solo. Up the hill was a larger than life size Chewbacca.

I can't stand the Ewoks in general, but Wicket is the exception. Ohhhhhh....isn't he so cute! I just want to pick him up and carry him in my purse.

NOT.

"Yub yub...eeh chop ah yub yub!!!!"

After that fun foray (well, fun for me and Bert but boring for TC and KDD), we wanted some dessert so we went to, and get this...

Sir Scoops a Lot for ice cream! That place should get an award for the best name ever for an ice cream place! We got a coffee ice cream waffle cone while the girls got Icees.

A funny bathroom sign:

The pass also allowed us to to to the Sealife Aquarium and the Waterpark. Since the Waterpark was only open on weekends, we took advantage of the aquarium pass. If you paid for all this separately, it would cost mucho dinero. I didn't take that many photos in the aquarium but it was pretty educational. Below, a giant Japanese spider crab. Their length can reach up to ten feet!  I kept thinking, "I wonder how that tastes!" Their legs are longer than those Alaskan king crabs! Ha ha!

You could also see various sealife like manta rays and leopard and shovelnosed sharks (among other species) in this "tunnel" which was really cool. No Great Whites though.

In all, a fun day. If we didn't have two tweens with us, we wouldn't have gone here at all. There's not much for adults to do and depending on the age of your child, many activities are limited by age/height/weight restrictions.  There are many hands on activities for those kids that are tactile-oriented.
