Fern St. Cafe

[Update - This place is now closed as of 2013 and has since reopened as an Italian sandwich shop/gelateria - Piacere Mio]

Fresh from our trip to the market, we once again headed to a different neighborhood to get our lunch on.

Traveling past the very striking and very pink Calvary Baptist Church in Barrio Logan...and this cool looking house in Sherman Heights. I really like how the door is situated at the corner of the house!

Our next destination would be the very charming neighborhood of South Park...

It's nice to see these older neighborhoods thriving. There is so much personality in the homes unlike the cookie cutter suburbs (where we live). So much variety - Craftsman bungalows, Spanish revival, Queen Anne Victorians, and so on. Plus, there are lots of trees providing shade and color.

I was looking through my coupons and saw that we hadn't gone here yet...the Fern St. Cafe, which is right on the corner of Grape and Fern,

From the signs outside and their menu items, it looked like they had a lot of healthy offerings...

Our coupon was buy one item and get one free, so Bert and I chose a couple of sandwiches, the Urban Gourmet for me and the Juniper for him. For TC, she opted to get the Almond Butter and Jelly sandwich from the (gasp!) kid's menu!

As you can see, it's very spacious in here. On the left (which you CAN"T see) is a very comfortable seating area with couches (it was occupied when I snapped the photo). There are also tables by the windows.

TC's almond butter and jelly sandwich. She was curious to try a different version of a nut butter.

Although she liked it, she thought the almond butter would be thicker. It was also creamy, so no chopped up almonds in there. The sandwich was a bit "thin" for her so we let her have bites of our savory sandwiches.

In the foreground was my "Urban Gourmet" ($6.99) - Turkey on multigrain bread, bacon, swiss chese, sliced pear, cranberry balsamic dressing and mayo. My sandwich was warmed up and toasty so that was nice. I liked almost everything about this except for the hard corners of the bread and the overly shredded lettuce, which I found too messy. I would have liked leaves of whole lettuce not shredded icebery..

"The Juniper"  ($6.99 but it was FREE with the coupon) - aka Bert's pick, which had pastrami on rye with provole, lettuce, red onion, mustard and again, that shredded lettuce. His sandwich was not warmed up but man, did TC love this sandwich! I liked it better than mine as well! The pastrami reminded me slightly of the awesome SMOKED MEAT sandwiches from Schwartz's in Montreal (those posts will be forthcoming...in several months, at the rate I'm going!) . This sandwich, while good, PALED in comparison to the sandwiches we had at Schwartz's. Our total with the coupon discount (up to $7 off) was less than $15 since Bert got a coffee and TC had her kid sandwich and hot apple cider. Not bad for three people...

I love taking these shots of TC and Bert. It's neat to see how fast she's grown over the past year. She's fast approaching the five foot mark! Pretty soon! I hope she grows taller than me one day!

I thought this was a really cute place! Our server was a really nice guy and he even brought our sandwiches over to us. I guess I was expecting to pick it up at the counter. Bert had one of their coffees here with a couple shots of espresso. Their coffee is from Caffe Calabria in North Park, a place I still want to visit. We've had their coffee at a couple of places already (Ritual Tavern and Cake) and each time, Bert really enjoyed it. This was a very chill place...
