Cake

When I saw this post about Cake's Open House by Jenny of the blog ,A Foray into Food and the genius behind Jenny Wenny Cakes, I knew we had to check it out...

So off we went after our lunch at Jalisco Cafe...

Cake is located in Mission Hills and is a cute and charming little bakery/cafe. They had goodies laid out on the tables for visiting guests. One of the ladies working there was greeting everyone and telling us to help ourselves. There was a lot of hustle and bustle in the back kitchen with what looked to be friends of the ladies working there.

This table had marinated olives and red velvet cupcakes...

The front counter had an assortment of cupcakes: Gingerbread, Pumpkin, and again, the Red Velvet.

A bigger table in the front had samples of the gift baskets they plan to offer fo the holiday season as well as samples of the cheeses. Since we had lunch, we had to pass on trying the cheese and crackers and tamales.

Later one, one of the gals put out little placards. This was the Pear, Walnut and Gorgonzola cheese torte. Looked really good but I'm not a fan of blue cheese. I'm sure it tasted great...

The other cheese torte was Italian in theme with Parmesan cheese, marinated olives, artichoke hearts, pesto and sun dried tomatoes. I now wish I had tried just a tiny bit of this since it sounds so good! I liked how colorful it looked as well. So attractive!

They just brought these tamales out and they smelled so good!

They were snatched up by guests in no time at all...

In addition to the savory samples, we tried one of each cupcake plus a mini lemon bar (delicious!) and a mini brownie. There was also a bowl filled with homemade chocolate covered toffee broken up into bits. I had a few pieces (not pictured) and loved it.

TC's favorite was the mini brownie. I liked the mini lemon bar. The cupcakes were refrigerated - you could tell since the batter wasn't light and fluffy as it would be fresh from the oven. It had a more dense feel to it but they were still all right. I liked the red velvet the best. Bert liked the gingerbread the best (seen below). You could really taste the molasses and ginger.

A passerby came in with his dog which went nuts when it saw the crackers and cheese table. This dog was on it's hind legs just dying to get a taste of something, anything. It was hopping up and down in anticipation. It was so cute! Coffee was also complimentary during the open house. I believe it comes from Cafe Calabria.

This was the Pumpkin cupcake with cream cheese frosting. We didn't care for it, but I think it was because it suffered from being refrigerated.  One of the ladies came out to chat with the guests and even sat with us for a few minutes answering any questions we might have had. I asked if they would, in the future, offer slices of their most popular flavor, the Banana Truffle cake. She said most likely mini cakes, so I am definitely going to come back for that one!

The window box full of succulents as we left Cake.

I'm glad we went to check it out. For some reason it didn't register with me that the Open House would have complimentary samples of their offerings. It was a nice touch and I regretted having had lunch at Jalisco. We really wanted to try those tamales but we already had our fill of Mexican food so it was just a sampling of the sweets. All the ladies there were really nice and welcome. We will come back when they're up and running and offering more desserts.

Sunny San Diego on a brisk December day!

Oh I saw Jenny's post and wanted to go to this but didn't have time. I'm so sad I missed out. The free samples look good. Too bad about the cupcakes being refrigerated.

Glad you had time to pop in there! I will probably be working there most mornings, it's a really fun atmosphere in there, and Jen is very dedicated to creating masterpieces. The banana truffle cake is definitely worth a try!
