Seafood Friday 2017 - Week 2: Ceviche kit from Northgate Market

Welcome to the second installment of this year's Seafood Friday. Bert was gone all week for a work training in Reno, Nevada (posts to follow!). He was coming home this evening and I opted to pick up something from Northgate Market....

(free magazine chock full of awesome recipes from Northgate Market)

so we could just eat dinner at home instead of trying to find a place on a Friday night..

When I walked into the market, there were older senoras manning food sample booths. One of the booths was promoting  a ceviche kit for "cuaresma" (Lent). This particular kit consisted of a container with three compartments, two for fish and shrimp ceviche (already pre-marinated in lime juice) and one for shrimp aguachile which is a super spicy chile and lime juice mixture. Each partition was 1 lb each. That cost $19.99 along with a free pack of tostadas.  I was given a sample of the shrimp aguachile at the lady's insistence. It was waaaaaay to hot for me since I am a wimp and can't handle super spicy flavors.  It was seriously like fire water. However, I liked the regular shrimp ceviche much better.

As I walked to the back of the market, another lady in a booth was also promoting a ceviche kit. It also had three partitions, one each for shrimp and fish ceviche and another with chopped tomatoes, onions and cilantro.  Each vacuum sealed bag was 2 lbs each and also $19.99. The housemade tostada pack was free ($1.99 value).

Lazy me got this family pack. It seemed easy enough.

The fish and shrimp mixtures were previously frozen (as I found out when I was trying to separate the chunks). I placed the two different ceviches in bowls and mixed with the salsa fresca.  My good friend La Ley says that she eats her ceviche on tostadas with mayo, so that is what we did.

Oh and by the way, that is NOT guacamole. When I grabbed the container at Northgate, I must have been in a hurry. I assumed it was guacamole. It was in fact, a very spicy avocado salsa.  We used it sparingly but wow, it really did pack some heat.

Dinner is served.

Pretty easy and stress free.

You can also make your own ceviche pretty easily but if you don't feel like doing so, you can go to any Mexican market and get the makings for ceviche (Northgate, Vallarta, Carnival, El Super, Pancho Villa's), Down here in Chula Vista, we're lucky to have a variety of markets to choose from. For any readers up north, you'll have to make the trek to either City Heights (Pancho Villa) or down south (National City, Chula Vista, San Ysidro).

Next week, I hope to do a seafood recipe from the free magazine!

Hi Lynn,
Yes, I totally agree! I had to look up what dok bokki was. After reading about it, it sounds good except I'm afraid it might be too spicy for me.
