while TC was a track practice...
Morning dates this past year have been pretty fun and since I saw on Instagram that Nomad was now offering vegan donuts, I was curious...
So off we went to give it a try. The only vegan donuts that I've tried and liked are Donut Panic's.

The new donut mobile was made by one of the owners' friends. Cute isn't it?
Just a few of their many offerings. This is what i really love about Nomad, their wide selection of unique flavors. Kicks ass on Donut Bar any day.

Vegan chili mango, double chocolate old fashioned, sweet potato brown butter sage with hazelnuts, candied pecan carrot cake plus free donut holes (chai, ugh).

Bert really like the carrot cake with candied pecans...

Me, not so much only since I'm not a carrot cake fan.
This was TC's mango chili donut. It wasn't that hot (we found out later). Pretty though.

Now this was probably the most interesting donut of the batch. The frosting had sage in it. The donut batter was sweet potato. I liked the hazelnuts on top. This was a more savory than sweet donut. I liked the elasticity of the dough as well.

We enjoyed a couple of our donuts at Caffe Calabria further south on 30th. While Bert got our drinks inside, I snagged an empty spot at the parklet outside. We couldn't eat our donuts INSIDE. That would look kinda bad, haha.

A macciato for me and a Bicerin for Bert (espresso with Nutella)

The latte art on mine wasn't as pretty but that didn't matter as much as how the coffee tasted. It was so smooth Not shown was my mini glass of sparkling water which was served with the coffee. It worked well as a "chaser".

Bert's coffee with Nutella which was pretty rich and smooth. Caffe Calabria gets it right everytime.

The demitasse spoon that I didn't even use. No sugar needed here. This was perfect.

The double chocolate old fashioned was petty heavy in the hand. I wished they had crisper outer edges to break off but overall, this was a pretty solid donut to please chocolate fans.

Real carrot shreds (big ones too) in the carrot cake/candied pecan donut.

Earlier that month, we received word that our Fresh & Easy on H Street would be closing (along with the one on J St on the west side of CV) and that everything in the store would be half off. Just the other day, TC and I bought snacks there. After that email, the store was pretty much cleaned out within a couple of days. We were able to get a few good deals and snacks but all of the alcohol was GONE! The closest Fresh & Easy then would be this one in North Park. Since we were in the area, we thought we'd take a look at it.

As you can see by the colored eggs (which by the way, this product must be for lazy ass people who can't even be bothered to color their own Easter eggs), this was BEFORE Easter. It's pretty big iin here and well organize as all of their stores are.

I was surprised to see they carried Magnolia brand ice cream. This is a Philippine brand but I'd never seen this small size in the Filipino supermarkets. Kinda pricey if you ask me.

I never saw this brand before, Foxy's Frozen Yogurt.

It's been more than one month and I miss our Fresh & Easy near us so much. It used to be the place where we could just pick up a few items without having to go to Ralph's or Costco. I remember when it opened back in 2007. Some of the workers who were there from the very beginning were there 'til the end as well. I hope they at least got to keep their jobs at another site. It's kind of sad that many of the F&E stores got closed. First they extended their hours and at a few locales, they became 24/7. Even those changes weren't enough to pick up slumping sales. Prior to the Chula Vista closures, there were more closures throughout San Diego. It was only a matter of time before the CV stores got hit, unfortunately.
Before picking up TC, we made one more stop within walking distance of this F&E...

That sage savory donut sounds really interesting - I'd want to try that! Plus, hazelnuts get me every time. That espresso + nutella drink sounds so good!
It's actually not that bad Mary. I'm not much for sage or sweet potato, but we had to try it. They really do have unique flavor combinations. They kick so much ass on that shitty Donut Bar. They leave them in the dust. Bert did like that nutella/coffee drink. Calabria does coffee right.
