Dessert revisited at Sea & Smoke

Dessert was just downstairs...

(photo from my "Dessert @ Sea & Smoke...", April 2014)

and since TC really enjoyed that dude's acoustic set...

we asked to be seated outside (which was about a five minute wait)...The singer was a talented young man, Tolan Shaw, local to San Diego, who just released a CD. I wasn't paying too much attention to the lyrics of his songs, but he did throw in a few covers songs. I wanted to ask him if he could take a special request and play something by Metallica or Anthrax. Just kidding, but not really.

Here's a recent video I found about the singer:

So while he sang in the background while customers enjoyed their lunches or brunches, we pondered our dessert choices. When I was here last year with my good friend Astroboi, we had a really unusual dessert. Looking at their list, there was nothing even close to it this year which was kind of disappointing. The pot de creme seemed promising but because I'm not fond of white chocolate, we didn't order it.  We ended up ordering the House Made S'mores for us to share plus sorbet for TC (the flavor turned out to be blood orange; they ran out of tangerine).

Cute, using a creamer for these plants...

Like the night before, TC and I ended up with iced tea (sans the ultra cool pressurized tea pots), an Arnold Palmer for her and peach for me. Bert's water glass was so cool!

Our two desserts...

The blood orange flavor was so refreshing!

As for our S'mores, it was delicious although the housemade marshmallows were so thick and not easy to cut into. There were crunchy bits (probably crushed graham cracker tuile) and a thick layer of salted caramel dark chocolate ganache. There was also supposed to be cocoa nibs (as described on their menu) but we didn't see or taste any in here. The tuile was thick and didn't really taste like a graham cracker. It was crunchy like a cracker instead of the softer texture you'd expect from a graham cracker.

Messy but so good!  Look at that thick ganache!  I couldn't really taste the caramel in there, but man, it was really rich.

This was a really creative take on S'mores . I wished there were more of the crackers to use to scoop and scrape up the marshmallow, ganache and chocolate sauce.

TC overheard this whiny man near us complaining that his French toast was "too sweet" and that he wanted another plate and could you make it snappy. Prior to ordering, he even asked the waitress if he could "taste a sample" first before ordering and she told him that they didn't so samples.

What a total tool. I didn't even hear anything he said but TC heard his whole whiny and snotty attitude towards the waitress. He even reminded her to make sure "it wasn't sweet". WTH. Why order French toast then, right?  Anyhow, it must really suck for servers to have to deal with self righteous a-holes like that one. I'm sure there are worse customer types, but TC was really put off that a grown man would act that way.

Previous visit:
April 2014 when I went out with my dear friend Astroboi and we had a coconut mousse with roasted pineapple with basil foam.

April is almost halfway over. Did you do your taxes yet? I hope you don't experience identity theft like we did! That fkg sucked but it's being taken care of. Apparently, this shit happens a lot and even more so recently this year than in the past, according to the CVPD.

My mom and I passed by their patio some weeks ago and she so wanted to try their Sunday brunch. The patio really seems serene. What did you think about the dessert prices here? That's unfortunate the other customer was such a pain. I agree that you french toast is kind of a sweet breakfast item so ya probably shouldn't order it if you don't like sweets. Sorry to hear about the identity theft. Now I'm paranoid - did you find out on your own or were you contacted by company/credit? I see those identity protection ads but never paid them much attention.

Hi Faye, I haven't tried brunch there yet but I'm sure it's good from what I've seen on their menu.

Yeah why order French toast. It's going to be sweet, duh, haha.

My husband found out after he filed our turbo tax. It was a pain to straighte things out to.

This looks like it can be a stop for us one day before County Fair time. What a fancy way to enjoy dessert...

Tax Return ID theft is almost too simple these days. Something needs to be done at the federal level.

Yes, it would be a nice stop for dessert! May bad karma fall upon those thieves!

Hahah... don't make my sweet breakfast sweet. Awesome. Maybe order something savory, dude. Your desserts look awesome - the gelato looks very refreshing. What a bummer about the identity theft! It amazes me that people do that kind of shit in the first place.

Yeah, that dude was a total a-hole. Seriously, why order French toast then.

The deconstructed S'mores was definitely different.

Bert sorted it out with the IRS and all but still, it was a big FKG pain in the ass.
