California Center for the Arts - "Art Illustrated: Celebrating Comic Arts" exhibit

Our next stop was the California Center for the Arts...

which is a huge complex designed to showcase dance, art, and music as well as offer cultural enrichment through museums and various educational programs...

The exhibit we wanted to see precedes Comic Con by about a month or so. I'm a sucker for these kinds of exhibits so off we went to learn more about Comic Art...

The cost for adults is $8. TC ended up being free, which was a nice surprise.

We had TC bring her school ID card in case there was a student discount, but lo and behold, she was free because she was 12 years old! Well, we have until the end of August to enjoy that discount, ha ha.

For comic strip fans, the dog that you see for the banner art is Puddles from "Luanne" by Greg Davis.

It was a pretty big exhibition which featured over 250 pieces of art in various incarnations, comic form, comic book cover mock ups, and personalized comic strip panels.

There was artwork from these strips and comic books: Spiderman, Batman, Dennis the Menace, Luanne, Zits, Baby Blues, Beetle Bailey, and Sherman's Lagoon to name a few. Disney cels were also thee, along with a few drawings by Warner Brothers great, Chuck Jones. There were even a few Theodore Geisel (aka Dr. Seuss) pieces (old adverts) and even one Roy Lichtenstein pieces. Obviously, photography was not allowed in the exhibit space, but we were able to enjoy the many pieces of art.

One of my favorite things I saw that day was the incredibly detailed artwork by Eric Shanower (who lives in San Diego) for his "Age of Bronze" graphic novel. Although I couldn't read each and every panel, since the letter was really tiny, we marveled at just how precise and minute his drawings were.

Another exhibit they had was the "Art of Stone", as in Stone Brewing Co, which is local to Escondido. If you've ever seen gargoyle for the  the Stone Arrogant Bastard Ale or any of their other brands, they had all that here. It was quite cool to see.

TC was quite interested in the juried art exhibit for grades 7-12. Art is one of her favorite subjects and after looking at the different pieces submitted by the middle schoolers (some which weren't so great), feels that she could do just as well or even better. She wants to enter a few submissions for next year!

Below, passing by City Hall while on the way to our next destination...

The exhibit runs until July 28th.

This is a really nice exhibit. There are so many things to see and do in this large county. Good you are promoting so many.

Thanks for the kind words Cathy. The exhibit was really cool and something that both of us (Bert and myself), as pop culture geeks could appreciate.
