We didn't see Willy Wonka or any Oompa Loompas but were treated to a personal tour by one of the workers...
and had a friendly chat with the lone gentleman who makes all of the handmade candies, such as these hand dipped dark chocolate caramels topped with sea salt.

Now those were some exquisite caramels!
If you haven't figured out by the past few posts, the weather here isn't exactly sunny like good ole San Diego. Knowing that, we still were intent on coming here for our spring break vacation. Forget sunny beaches, palm trees, and 80+ degree weather in Mexico, Florida, or Hawaii. We chose rainy and cold Portland and WE LOVE IT and stand by our choice!

No trip to PDX is complete without at least one visit to Burgerville (this is the one off SE Powell). All of their ingredients are local...
Lunch yesterday was at this food pod - the D Street Noshery located on the corner of 32nd and SE Division in SE Portland.

Can you guess what type of food this cart serves?
This pod was also across the street from Pok Pok which is currently undergoing renovations....
Down the street was a thrift store jampacked with a multitude of objects...

Amazingly, I walked away empty handed but TC found a few items that caught her fancy, while Bert found a mini Stone Henge toy.
After our lunch and shopping foray, we headed into the NE Mississippi section of PDX...

Both TC and I got a graphic novel each ("Ghostopolis" for her and "Chew 4" for me).
Next door to the comic store was a fancy schmancy ice cream place...

While the ice cream flight sounded tempting, both Bert and I knew we couldn't handle that much ice cream. They didn't have odd flavors here but what they did have was quite good...
I thought this was funny because in the IFC sketch comedy "Portlandia", there is a bit about a guy who makes "artisanal lightbulbs".

I wonder if they got that idea from this store!
A funny sign I saw in a window in the outer Pearl District...

Also scattered in parts of the city are remnants of the city's past:

Horse rings to help tie down your steed!
We've been staying in during the nights and watching DVD's we brought from home:
"Ferris Bueller's Day Off"
"The Lord of the Rings - Return of the King"
"The Goonies" (of course)
"The Iron Giant"
"Big Fat Liar" and
"Invader Zim - Operation Doom" (not a movie but a compilation of "Invader Zim" episodes)
Nothing beats family time while watching Mr. Rooney get attacked by a dog or seeing Gollum bite off Frodo's finger at the top of Mount Doom!

That Burgerville is by Cleveland High School, where my sister went to school and where Phil Knight, the guy who started Nike, also graduated.
Look for toy horses tied to the horse rings. They're all over the city.
We noticed that high school - very traditional looking with the brick and all. Huge too!
What comic book store did you go to?
I prefer a cloudy day to a sunny one any day especially if it involves a lot of walking.
I love Burgerville!
hi darlene - it was bridge city comics on n. mississippi.
