Way before New Order became known for their 12" dance singles played at frat parties, not that I ever went to any!
This is one of Joy Division's most iconic songs...
Although "Love Will Tear Us Apart" was released in 1979, sadly, it was made more popular after brooding lead singer Ian Curtis committed suicide in 1980.
Here's the cover of the single...
The title was an ironic reference to Captain and Tennille's "Love will Keep us Together". His tombstone even has "Love Will Tear Us Apart" as it's epitaph.
I like this cover better, from the 12":
Here's a different version of "Love Will Tear Us Apart" (BBC version):
"When routine bites hard
And emotions are low
And resentment rides high
But emotions won't grow
And we're changing our ways
Taking different roads
Love, love will tear us apart again
love, love will tear us apart again..."
Pop culture reference - Also heard in a scene in "Donnie Darko" where Donnie is at a party and the song is playing in the background as he and his girlfriend walk upstairs.
What I also liked about this scene's music is when they're walking down the stairs, they're playing The Church's "Under the Milky Way". Love that song too!
Had to get some mopey music in here as well. Another blast to the not so distant past.
My previous entry - "J" is for Joan Jett!
Next week - K!

I recently began to appreciate "Love Will Tear Us Apart" despite its mopiness. I think it's one of the most covered songs in history.
more so than "Yesterday"? :) it is a very mopey song, eh!
