Here are some clues:
The lead singer of this band was once married to Pretenders frontwoman Chrissie Hynde.
One of their songs was paid the ultimate tribute...by being parodied in "Star Wars" form by Wierd Al (answer at the end of the post)...
Who could it be now?
None other than the Kinks!
This song is from the sixth studio album by the Kinks...

The video is so dated. Don't you just love their hairstyles? And their teefs? Ha ha.
This song is played in the scene in "Hot Fuzz"when Sgt. Angel (Pegg)is jogging through town in the beginning of the movie. It's a nostalgic and reflective song about growing up in a small English village. It was also funny because Sgt. Angel was sent to the "crimefree" town of Sandford in rural Gloucestershire, since he outperformed his colleagues in the city (the movie plays Adam Ant's, "Goodie Two Shoes" in the opening sequence of the film to illustrate this). Since he made the other cops look "bad" in comparison, he was sent off to the country side for punishment. The "Village Green" referred to in the song is normally the place where people gather for entertainment, I guess like the town square.
The name of the song also inspired the Green Preservation Society, a now defunct Filipino American psychedelic/pop band that featured Jay Averilla, former bassist from Julie Plug (another defunct Filipino American alternative band that I really loved; the lead singer's voice reminded me of Harriet Wheeler from The Sundays).

Previous entry - "K" is for the Knack!
Next week - L!
And before I sign off, the answer to the Wierd Al song is:
"Yoda" which parodied "Lola" by the Kinks:
Yo yo yo yo Yoda!
