and realized that it was a Tuesday...
which meant the Farmer's Market would be here at the Otay Ranch Town Center (usually called the Otay Ranch mall by locals). I noticed the chimney cake vendor above. I've had chimney cake before at the International Deli and Cafe in Linda Vista. It was cool seeing the strips of dough rolled around the heated metal cylinders.
This booth is one of my favorites. The guy working here is always so friendly. I usually get the patties (meat pies); they are 1 for $3 or 2 for$5, so I bought four (one chicken, one spinach, and two beef). He told my my total was two million dollars. He's always joking around.

He also has a variety of hot foods like jerk chicken (he gave me a sample) and oxtail stew, some sort of rice dish and another chicken dish. I'll have to try those next time.
Not too far down the promenade was this booth. I was excited to see Russian food offered! I hadn't been here in a while so I wasn't sure if this was a new or regular vendor. I figured I would check it out and take a few things home for dinner. The word "Babushki" is plural for "babushka" which means "Grandmother" in Russian.

The lady working here was really nice. The market had just opened and everything was fresh and ready to go. I admired this hand painted vessel (I think it may be a 'samovar', which is traditionally used to boil and heat water

She had four different food items available. There were apple turnovers for dessert. I loved the look of these turnovers because of the way they were folded. The open sections give you a tantalizing look at the delicious filling.

The large pans held some Russian comfort foods - Cabbage rolls and pirozhki. The styrofoam container in the middle held beet salad (made two hours ago, she said). The cabbage rolls were so big! Everything looked so nice with the freshly chopped herbs.

You can order a small or large portion of the pirozhki (7 for $7; she gave me 9 pieces). The beet salad was $7 while the cabbage roll with tomato sauce was $6. The pirozhki were filled with potato and were covered with lovely caramelized onions.

At home...

Stuffed with rice and some sort of meat...(maybe chicken or pork, not sure). This was pretty packed and sturdy too. I've never had a cabbage roll before. The three of us could not even finish this in one sitting.

The beet salad looked more attractive with all of the components cut into tiny cubes. They tasted like they were roasted and not boiled. I like how this looked compared to big chunks or slices.

Glad I skipped going to the gym for this (don't tell my trainer!). But seriously, this food was so delicious. I'll have to try that oxtail stew from the Jamaican place in the near future.

My favorite cabbage roll is at pomegranate / kafe sobaka. I've even tried making it at home once but didn't have that wham bam sauce to match. Your trainer doesn't need to know everything... :)
Hi Lynn,
I haven't tried the version from Kafe Sobaka yet. I do like that place. Yeah you're right, it's better to keep food secrets from the folks at the gym, haha.
