Breakfast @ Nomad Donuts + return to Holy Matcha

After our coffee at The Dojo Cafe, we tried going to the nearby City Heights Coffee House but it was closed....

so instead, we drove westward to North Park for breakfast...

There was no line (yay) and no crowds.

We both selected our sandwiches, served on wood-fired Montreal style bagels.  MN had the salmon on an "everything" bagel while my prosciutto had poppy seeds on the bagel (I realize after I took the photo that it was upside down, hence that bagel half looked quite bare).

Prosciutto and arugula with garlic herb cream cheese, tomato and pickled red onion;

The house cured salmon with a dill caper sauce, arugula and tomato was also tasty. We each shared our halves.  We enjoyed both but I liked the prosciutto more.

We couldn't leave without getting two donuts. This was also another first for MN. She hadn't tried Montreal style bagels before or Nomad's artisan donuts.  She let me choose the flavors so I selected mango tamarind chili plus the hibiscus pistachio and honey custard filled donut.

The mango tamarind chili donut was like Mexican candy in donut form. It just needed some Chamoy! Now that would have been something. The filled donut was so pretty, with the bright green chopped pistachios. This was not elegant to eat, but we enjoyed both flavors. MN's husband like the filled donut more than the mango tamarind chili.

As always, Nomad's donuts are on point with the presentation, flavor and execution of the flavors. Believe me, there were other flavors I wanted to try, but we are both cutting back on sweets, so two was the magic number for today.

Not too far away was Holy Matcha. MN hadn't been here before or has ever tried traditional matcha before so we had to stop in.  Like at Nomad, it was still pretty early. The seats by the wall were actually unoccupied for once.  Usually, there's a long line waiting and the seats are filled with mostly female customers taking selfies with their food and the botanical print wallpapered wall.

BARREN!

Our drinks - I ordered the Ceremonial matcha for my friend...served in a cute pink chawan.

Shot of pink pubey pillow is for you Astroboi.

The flowers in my coconut milk matcha latte is a new thing I suppose. It wasn't in my drink last year when I ordered it.

These two drinks were the very same ones that were ordered by Bert and myself last May. This was the night that TC went to prom with her now ex-BF; we had dinner at Tribute then ended up here afterwards.  The bench we sat on outside was dark pink. If you look at my exterior shot of Holy Matcha for this post, that same bench is now light pink. I think the dark pink looks more striking.

It was funny...while we were here, the young girls working the place had music on that seemed incongruous to this place, especially since there were some young mothers here with toddler children that same morning. What were they playing you ask?  The Notorious B.I.G. (aka Biggie Smalls), an East Coast rapper who was killed in a drive by shooting in 1997. I was expecting this place to play some twee kind of music or some  hipster sensitive songwriter pablum not late 90's hip-hop. I believe they were playing his last album, "Life after Death" in its entirety, complete with curse words and all. Nice for the youngsters to hear. Maybe they weren't listening, but still, I didn't think it was appropriate. Am I getting old or what?

One of the songs they played, was pretty decent. Notorious B.I.G. sampled Herb Alpert's "Rise" which is pretty much the groove for the whole song:

It's like a mini movie! You can see Sean "Diddy" Combs (aka Puff Daddy) in the video (it was 1997 after all); he co-produced this song.

"Hynotize" was one of the "cleaner" songs on that album.  But hey, maybe one of those toddlers' new words from the other album's cuts will be "bitch" and the MF, F, and N words thanks to the hapless clerks here!

Here's the original "Rise" (1979), and yes I do remember this song. It was one of the few trumpet instrumentals that made the top 40 that year. You know, this song is still groovy after all these years...

Tomorrow, we leave for PDX!
