"Puro Pedo" is slang term that means"chill out" or "relax". La Ley told me it could also mean "bullshit". If you want to translate it literally, it would be "pure fart" but that doesn't make much sense. I wonder if they are sponsored by the Puro Pedo clothing brand I sometimes see folks wearing...
In any case, here are more random pix for your perusal...
A warning sign I saw near Tacos Perla in North Park.

The South Bay Salt Works, as seen on the Palomar Street Bridge as you near the southbound offramp to
the I-5. The salt factory has been in operation since the 1870's and produces about 75,000 tons of salt a year.

The makings of "3 Ingredient Ice Cream Cupcakes" (recipe from Kirbie's blog):

This was my first time using cake flour rather than regular flour. The texture of the cupcakes was super soft. Unfortunately, the cupcakes didn't really taste that great to me. The nephews weren't crazy about i either. The texture was very soft and the flavor was kind of "weak" and not very chocolatey at all. Well, at least I tried making it once.
In my parents' covered patio, a TV tuned to Bourdain's "Parts Unknown"...

Yes, that is a stainless steel rice cooker.
From their garden earlier this summer, potted alugbati (malabar nightshade) and my favorite, ampalaya (bittermelon). I love the bittermelon leaves in soup.

They are growing two kinds of kale...

They were also growing lima beans...

as well as artichokes, which haven't produced yet.

The eggplants are now done, but here's one of them earlier this summer.

For July 4th, we made a stop at the Otay Ranch Town Center to use a 2 for 1 coupon at Fruit & Beyond, which TC and I first visited back in February.

Awww yeah, two kinds of chamango here: watermelon and mango with pineapple. Both were delicious!
On the western side of the 54 Freeway...

Very cool!
Two of Patricia Justiniani McReynold's last paintings...

Plus her other artworks over the decades (pottery, weaving, stained glass, painting)...

along with her published books, self-portrait and her autobiography, "Almost Americans" (1997, Red Crane Press)

(photos from her memorial service in June)
I donated several items to the FANHS Biennial Conference Gala's Silent Auction. One of them was a food related duo which consisted of Marvin Gapultos' book, "The Adobo Road" (autographed when I met him at his book signing in Pasadena last year; he signed four books for me, so this was an extra one) and a t-shirt from Lagulabeach designs, featuring names of Filipino foods and the shadow lettering, "Always Gutom", which means "Always Hungry". If you ever go to JNC Pinoy Food Mart down in Chula Vista, the staff wears this shirt, but in red. All of my favorite foods are on that shirt like pinakbet, adobo, nilaga and dinuguan!

Whoever bid on this and won is a lucky bastard!
As seen at Seafood City...

I didn't buy them. I didn't think a teriyaki Spam was even necessary. Doesn't everyone own teriyaki sauce anyways, haha. Chorizo SPAM didn't sound appetizing to me either.
Loved the font on this side, seen on Broadway in Chula Vista near Krua Thai.

You know the "cronut" has jumped that shark when Jack in the Box starts offering their version.

I haven't tried it but from what I've read from other sites, it's not flaky at all and tastes like a churro.
The super religious house on the corner of Quintard and Orange Ave in south Chula Vista...

During Christmas, they put up a different sign, but this one is up ALL YEAR! Yay!
Box of limes at Seafood City (my Seafood City in Chula Vista on Orange Ave)...

We did not see any little kids tormenting the box of blue crabs or elderly lola's prodding and poking them either. We did see these fish whose eyes tell you the varying degrees of freshness.

I'd never seen frozen bibingka before. That is a travesty.

I liked the variety of tropical flavored juices here, especially calamansi and dalandan!

This was a new brand of fried chicken skins and man, were these good!

Two ounces were on sale for .99 each.
The disturbingly named "Baby Finger" cookies. My mom actually likes these cookies. Like every thrifty Filipino mom, she saves the plastic container and uses it to store leftovers.

All right tell me which items do NOT belong...

Intermixed with the coffee, fruit and tea flavored candies are HALL's COUGH DROPS.
WTH man!
TC has been offered Hall's as "candy" by my dad and her friends' grandparents too. What's up with that?
A recent outing at Trader Joe's with Mr. TJ and La Ley where we had lunch. The egg white salad was terrible and I advise you against this unless you enjoy flavorless food. Ugh.

At the beginning of the school year, one of my student's dropped off this container of heart shaped tea cakes from Hans and Harry Bakery. These are my favorite (but he didn't know that) because they are the perfect snacking size and have chocolate chips inside. I shared this with my co-workers instead of hoarding it all to myself.

Also bought for the FANHS Biennial Conference Gala silent auction (I still have to do my FANHS Conference post), a quartet of local craft beers. Stone is everywhere, but Belching Beaver, you gotta love the name!

The evening of the silent auction, I saw the bids went as high as $40 for this....Nice, considering I only paid $2.99 for the Saint Archer.
Across the street from the strip mall with Supannee of Thai in Point Loma. Bert recently read some article in the paper that listed a bunch of San Diego restaurants that were closed due to vermin. This was one of them. It's since reopened. Want some rat feces with your guacamole? Roach eggs in your fajitas?

Croom's has since taken over the old Coop's BBQ location in Chula Vista. We still have to try out Croom's new digs.

Here is the "old" Croom's which is now Johnny's Deli & Fruiteria, on H Street, across from the Chula Vista mall.

Speaking of malls, we went to the Otay Ranch Town Center the day before TC started school. It was the night of their Farmers' Market. We got a few international items for dinner that night...

A pair of pupusas (cheese with spinach and pork with beans) at a Salvadoran booth, watermelon juice, and from the Jamaican stand, two patties (chicken and beef), with a combo plate of jerk chicken, rice, beans, vegetables and plantains.

Delicious pupusas which came with a side of curtida (pickled cabbage). The Jamaican combo plate was also quite hearty. We shared everything and enjoyed it all!

A roast chicken I made last month. It only coast $6 at Fresh & Easy and I roasted it with olive oil, salt, pepper and lemon. Loved how crisp the skin was. The leftovers were enjoyed in wraps and salads later that week

A cool mural seen in Barrio Logan.

"Life is a Dream"
Also seen on Logan Avenue in Barrio Logan...

This little corner eatery used to be House Burger (blogged by me two years ago, and more recently Cathy this past May). It has seen been bought by other owners and reopened as a new mariscos place.

I'll have to try that place sometime, perhaps during my upcoming Fall break.
Ready to go Chamango and red cactus fruits at "Save a Lot Market" in south San Diego.

Pappardelle with sauteed mushrooms, peas, spinach in a yellow curry sauce.

The noodles were on clearance for $1/lb at Fresh & Easy. This was a hit with Bert and TC.
Yes, MUST USE. And we did...blue raspberry gelati with vanilla frozen custard for Bert and me plus TC's juicy pear Italian ice.

As predicted, this place continues to be quite popular! I'm glad we have a Rita's in our neighborhood!
A closed down hotel in the East Village, seen a few weekends ago...

I liked seeing the contrast between this really old hotel and the newer high rises.
Bert and I strolled over to Petco Park to see the Tony Gwynn statue...

This hair salon sign looks like it copies a Tokidoki character for their logo. Simone Legno needs to sue them, haha!

Compare to the image below...

Total biters.
The taco shop near the strip mall which has Donut Panic in Grantville...

The Palm Reader sign in National City on the I-5. Back in the 80's, the sign used to have a palm with an eyeball in the middle.

$3.80 for this. WTH...

Cookies from Patricia's memorial service. My favorite was the blueberry white chocolate chip cookie. Great combination and I normally don't like white chocolate at all.

Last weekend while looking for the Roast Coach Coffee Bar, Bert and I saw the "future home of Sempra"....

A few steps away is a fire station in the East Village...

Petco Park with sand sculptures (#19 for the late Tony Gwynn)...

We saw some German tourists taking photos of the stadium and a several families walking about that morning...
Near the Tony Gwynn statue is this older brick building.

In North Park, one of the many Bunny Kitty murals in this area...

A more updated shot of the old Woolworth building with street art from Joachim Ixcalli.

TORC and I saw him earlier this summer laying down the flat panes of color. A few days later, he went over the design with the dark blue lines. If you look at it from across the street, Hammond's Ice Cream is on your left.
This is all for now...
