Spring Break Trip 2018 - Portland: Day 4 Highlights

Despite the constant drizzle, we set out for the day...

near the alma mater of Matt Groenig....

where there is a familiar Simpsons character etched in concrete by its creator. I was so pleased that Bert selected this pop culture reference for our trip.

We walked to a nearby streetcar station which took us to the Aerial Tram (below, the tram pod is depicted via tiles painted by school children.

If it wasn't cloudy and raining, we would have had a great view! It's the story so far, ha ha.  But still, the experience was interesting. It really was a cool vantage point and we could see quite a lot actually In the above photo, you can see Portland's newest bridge on the farthest right, the Tillikum Crossing which opened September 2015. It serves only the streetcar, buses and pedestrians but no cars.

On our way back to the hotel, TC wanted to stop in to this quirky craft/gift store downtown...

On the way back was Portland Donut Stop #3. The one below is this particular shop's signature donut. This was a more modern shop doing old school style donuts, but some with interesting (but not too crazy) flavors.

This very same day was Portland Donut Stop #4 over in the SE Quadrant. What made this different than the other shops was that their donuts were all vegan. This was their signature namesake donut, chosen by TC. I( can't wait to do the full post for this shop!

In the same area was an offshoot of a popular Vietnamese restaurant. This newer location has been open for two and a half years. They were the proprietors of the previous eatery, retired and then got bored of retirement. We liked this photo because the owner is with their grandchildren and they are are in their college and high school graduation robes.  The grandmother proudly told me, "In two years, we will have a doctor!"!

Back to the Hawthorne neighborhood was a cool double decker bus serving coffee...

Up the block was one of Portland's oldest comic book store. We did Cosmic Monkey and Floating World in 2009 plus Bridge City Comics in 2012. I can't believe we missed this place!  All of us happened to come across some good finds here, so yay!

Yes, that is Howard the Duck holding the namesake sword.

In the Alberta Arts district was one of many cool murals...

We had a cool time walking up and down the street looking at all of the different murals.

We drove back to the hotel on the Broadway Bridge, a distinct drawbridge located parallel to the Steel Bridge (seen in the background), which is also remarkable since that one is a double decker vertical lift bridge.

Tomorrow would be fun...

There was a certain exhibit at the Portland Art Museum we planned to see.  It has been on display since October 2017 and closes May of this year. One of the reasons I planned this spring trip was to visit this exhibit...
