To the Point Cafe and Eatery

Yesterday TC had a tennis event and we had to drop her off early...

The skies were gloomy and foggy as we made our way up the 5, passing by my favorite landmark, the Palm Reader sign near Division St. in National City...

and seeing the top of this new'ish building on Market Street covered by fog...

After dropping off TC, Bert and I wanted to check out a local eatery that I'd been curious about (see Cathy's post linked at the end)...

To the Point Cafe & Eatery is next to Domino's Pizza and a tall apartment building complex (with a Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf on the Corner). It's easy to miss. It has a cute cottage feel complete with a white picket fence...

Although the lighting outside would have been better for my photos, it was kind of cold, so inside we were for that morning.

We were among the first people there (they opened at 8 am) and sat by the wall, which had a gallery of sorts featuring historical photos of old Point Loma and the Portuguese community.

Cucumber water was served as you can see. The coffee was from Cafe Moto which Bert enjoyed.

I really thought the California Chili hot sauce bottle's font was totally "groovy", ha ha.

Their food & drinks menu:

Originally I was going to stick with water but when I saw the Chilled Shaken Espresso on there, I knew I had to have it.

Like the water, my coffee drink was served in a cute jar. There was a lovely frothy layer of foam and ice atop the espresso. It was "infused with vanilla" but not overpoweringly so. I really enjoyed my drink and plan to figure out how to do this at home. We have a cocktail shaker from our wedding gift stash that we haven't even used.  Holy shiz man, that's two decades of non-usage. It's in the cupboard somewhere, ha ha.

Sorry for the redundancy, but I wanted to include the vintage photo of the Point Loma Lighthouse...

Now on to the food.  Bert can never pass up lox so that is what he ordered, the Lox Benedict. I had a hankering for something with sausage and while I was going to forsake the sausage sandwich when I saw Fried Chicken and Waffles on the menu, I did an about face when I found out the chicken portion was the BREAST.  No wings or thighs or even a leg, but the breast.  I'm sure it tastes great, but I had to pass on this healthy version.

I chose the sausage/egg s andwich (choice of bread was croissant). Linguica was my sausage of choice. I had to, this was Point Loma which has a strong Portuguese heritage. The chicken apple sausage would not cut it for me that morning. I also elected to have the cream cheese on the side, which I was glad I did. I thought it was kind of odd to have cream cheese. It seemed like it would have paired better with lox.

Speaking of lox, here is Bert's entree; his choice of side was their potato cake. While it looks small, it was actually quite substantial with a nice crust and fluffy interior.  He loves eggs benedict anything and with lox, even better.

He didn't think the egg was all that runny.  If the eggs were cooked over hard (which I know defeats the purpose of eggs benedict), I would probably like this. But yeah, runny eggs and me don't mix.

This was a really good potato cake!

My linguica and egg croissant sandwich was quite filling. The sausage had that lovely smoky flavor and had a nice snap to it.

This was a very nice and leisurely breakfast. None of this hurried horking down crap.  We really enjoyed our time here. I was especially happy about my spur of the moment decision to try that coffee drink too.

Who else went to To the Point?
It was Cathy's post from two years ago that stuck in the back of my mind. If you notice her second photo of the exterior, you will see that the apartment buildings (which also houses Coffee, Bean & Tea Leaf) had not yet been built. How things change so quickly in a short period of time.

Here's what that corner looks like now.

We really enjoyed our breakfast here. Our waitress was so gracious and very attentive. We liked the laid back atmosphere (sans the over folksy/hipster music; sorry but I just don't dig that genre but of course, I know they probably wouldn't play heavy metal or 80's hair bands to make me happy), the decor, the historical photos of old Point Loma featuring Portuguese pioneers, and the quality of their food.  We hope to return in the near future.

Very happy to see you made it here. Usually we are early because we are headed to the cemetery and end up at PL Bagel instead ; now will make more of an effort-breakfast looks great and exactly what we'd order.

Yes, me too. It's great having recommendations from friends/blogger friends. I noticed they also changed the decor from white furniture to darker. I wouldn't mind going here again (and having that shaken/chilled espresso drink!).
