RIP David Bowie (1947 - 2016)...
"Space Oddity" - The first Bowie song heard on the radio when I was still a kid:
I remember thinking, "Gosh, these lyrics are pretty sad and depressing". At that time, I hadn't seen what he looked like or knew of his influence during the Glitter Rock years (early 70's). Later as a teen and young adult, I would later learn and appreciate how far reaching his influence was.
The first David Bowie video I ever saw, "Ashes to Ashes" from the "Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps) album, 1980):
By this time, David Bowie had already undergone so many different musical personas, and during the mid to late 80's, he veered into New Wave and Pop. He even utilized Stevie Ray Vaughn, then an unknown guitarist on his commercially popular album, "Let's Dance" (1983) which also included the hits "Modern Love" and "China Girl".
This 80's era video features two musical icons, Mick Jagger and David Bowie performing an exuberant version of Martha and the Vandella's Motown classic, "Dancing in the Streets":
Mick Jagger still has those gyrating moves!
A random use of his song, "Young Americans" (from the album of the same name, released in 1975) in a totally NOT-PC scene from "Sixteen Candles" (it plays during the first few seconds):
*Trivia - Late great soul singer Luther Vandross does background vocals for this song
One of my favorite Bowie covers, Nirvana's acoustic version of "The Man Who Sold the World", as seen on MTV Unplugged (remember that young ones?) when they used to do Unplugged and show actual videos.
Check out a young pre-Foo Fighters Dave Grohl (when he was still a drummer)
plus Fobia's version of "Under Pressure" ("Presionando) from the Rock en Espanol "Tributo a Queen", 1996).
I love love love this! La Ley introduced me to this album since she's a big Rock en Espanol fan. Of course, the original duet featuring David Bowie and Queen is still awesome.
Best use of a David Bowie song in the talent show scene in "The Runaways" (where Dakota Fanning plays a young Cherie Curry lip-syncing to "Lady Grinning Soul" while sporting the iconic "Aladdin Sane" lightning bolt makeup):
I love how she flips everyone off.
Best use of a David Bowie cameo...in the "Zoolander" Fashion Walk Off scene:
Previous Bowie reference in my blog:
"Happy Hour - Cafe 21, Gaslamp" April 2014 - when I wore my big lightning bolt earrings and TWO people made the same Bowie reference that same night.
It's so very sad to know that Bowie is no more. He leaves behind his wife, Iman and his daughter Alexandria, who was born the same year as TC (2000). I grew up listening to David Bowie's music, examining his album covers with great interest with each release (including Tin Machine, his solo project). I haven't seen his new video "Lazarus" yet because I know it will be too emotional, especially since he made the album and video knowing his time on earth was limited.

Thank you. The links are a great compilation. His true genius is now being recognized.
You're welcome. It's good to know you appreciate this post. I wanted my links to be personal. He is an artist I've always admired even if I didn't always like everything he did.
