Return to LAX-C & Mae Ting's Coconut Cakes

Buzzed with caffeine (and sugar) from San Marco Coffee Roasting House in Burbank...

we made our way to the outskirts of LA's Chinatown...

to once again visit LAX-C, aka the Thai Costco (or Asian if want to be more inclusive, but basically a lot of their shit is Thai, like 90%)

From this vantage point is their entrance. The other building where I'm standing has the bathrooms. They're not the nicest but if you're desperate, they have 'em.

Sriracha flavor is everywhere now.

Yes, cough drops are mixed with the candy even here!

We bought one of those freeze ried dragon fruits chips. I thought they were awful but TC liked them. I think fresh is better.

Squid galore.

Same with Pad Thai sauce...

These cans of Thai curries were dirt cheap. Like only $1.50 or something.

I think I ended up putting these back...

Tamarind pods...

I got yer coconuts right HERE.

One of these days, we're going to have to try the food at Taste of Thai, their in-house eatery here.

Fried and sweet snacks...

They don't have the Americanized Thai food which is cool, but a lot of the food looks..."hot" and could do some "damage" intestinally so for that day, it was just a look see.

What we ended up with...

The coconut rolls ended up not tasting that great. I thought they were stale and I was bummed to have wasted $2 on this.

Right outside LAX-C was the other reason for our visit...Mae Ting's Coconut Cakes!

Mae Ting was there that day and was giving out free canvas bags. This was actually the second one she gave me which she deemed "better" since it had pockets. The one below was the first one she gave but she had me turn that back in for the red one. Both bags were cute but I liked the red one better.

Ha, the pumpkin container was so random. It was January.

One of the ladies making kanom krok (mini coconut cakes...

We went all out that morning for our "snack". Remember, we had a very light breakfast (one potato ball each and a bite or two of that empanada at porto's).

Curry puffs - The fluted crust is so good and the flaky dough melts in your mouth...

I forgot the filling for this but it was quite yellow. The coiled sausage was supposed to be spicy.

Thai sausage - Hell yeah. Four links! Plus sticky rice.

The coiled sausage was kind of dry and not that great. The other sausage seemed to be filled with a lot of rice.  It's not as good as Supannee's but this was a pretty substantial snack.

Leftovers were put in our cooler...

Although our visit was earlier this year (January 2015), here is a recent video from March 2015 featuring Mae Ting's papaya salad (which Cathy and her Mister have had during their visit):

We'll have to try that papaya salad for our next trip up!

Previous visits from July 2014:
LAX-C
Mae Ting's

Day 2 of our trip also included another museum visit which would actually be a "revisit" to the "Epicentre of Art, Fighting Cultural Deprivation"...if you recall Bert's "bandito" shirt from a few posts ago, then you will know exactly what this place is!
